If you’re not reading Ali’s blog, you need to get on that. Pronto. She’s hysterical, her observations are dead on balls accurate, and she’s from Long Island so that means she has a special place in my heart (although I live in Delaware, I was born and raised on Long Island). Also, for some reason, she likes this little blog here. In fact, she likes it so much she nominated me for one of those fun blogging awards that go around.
As part of it, she asked me (and other bloggers) 10 questions. I’m going to answer them because why not. I’m also going to post my 10 questions at the end and nominate everyone who has a blog and wants to to answer.
- What inspired you to start blogging? Believe it or not, this blog started out as a personal finance blog. I wanted to document our journey out of debt and how we were learning to manage our money and also, I love to write and needed an outlet for it. I eventually tired of writing about money all the time (and admittedly, I wasn’t very good at most of the time) and converted the blog to what you see now. Sorry.
- What song do you ABSOLUTELY hate? “Losing My Religion” by R.E.M. That song makes me want to stick sharp objects in my ears.
- Have you ever written a blog post that you regret posting? Absolutely, and I’ve since deleted them. There are a few more that need to go because they’re basically shit and not at all reflective of what I want here. But I haven’t done it yet because #lazyblogger
- Has your blog ever faced any negativity & if so how did you handle it? If my blog has faced negativity, it’s been behind my back. I’ve been fortunate so far that no one has been openly hostile to my face or in the comments or via hate mail, but I’ve also never had a post go viral so maybe my experience is skewed. I did have a couple of posts featured on The Consumerist which received a few not so nice comments but I just chalked that up to their readers not having a sense of humor.
- Who inspires you? This is probably the most difficult question for me to answer. If I’m going the celebrity route, it’s Mindy Kaling, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler…all the ladies you’d expect to see on a list. If I’m going the people I know in real life, I’m going to say I’m inspired by anyone I know–specifically blogger friends–who manage to enjoy life and be all around awesome. Mostly, I’m inspired by people who live their lives for themselves and not for the purpose of impressing anyone else.
- What’s in your purse right now? My wallet, phone, crayons and paper, pens, a nail file, few lip balms, hand lotion, my all purpose bag featuring band aids, ibuprofen, tweezers, gauze, etc., antibacterial hand soap, tissues, baby wipes, and my keys. I have a typical mom purse.
- What website are you DYING to get featured on or write for, if any? Book Riot, HuffPo, Hello Giggles, and Buzzfeed. Blogger standards, I suppose.
- What’s your favorite room in your house/apartment? I’d have to say my living room. It’s good for reading, Netflix binging, napping, and it’s next to the kitchen for convenient snacking.
- If there was a movie about your life, who would play you? I can’t think of any short, fat brown haired, brown eyed actresses except for fellow Long Islander Nikki Blonksy but I’m not sure she’s acting any more so maybe Ellen Page even though she’s not fat. I can lose weight. Or she can wear a fat suit. Definitely one of those.
- What’s your most embarrassing moment? I don’t know that I have one that’s so mortifying it sticks out in any way. I did have an encounter once with the then-dean of my entire university and after he told me he worked for the school, I asked him what he did. Like I’m supposed to know what he looks like. The husband never lets me forget it and says I should be embarrassed by it. I’m really not but we’ll roll with that one.
Now it’s your turn. Feel free to answer all or some or none of the questions below.
- What websites or blog do you read every single day?
- If you could attend one awards show, which one would it be?
- What is one thing you are deathly afraid of?
- What book do you always recommend to people?
- Open a playlist on any device you have. Hit shuffle. What are the first 5 songs that come up?
- When and where do you blog (as in, at what time of day and in what location)?
- What song is your personal anthem?
- If you were selected to give a TED Talk, what would be your topic?
- What’s your favorite quote or saying?
- What is a song, movie, book, or TV show that always makes you cry?
Bonus question: Do you think Mighty Mouse could beat up Superman?

That song plucks so many nerves for me. Always has. I have other teenage angst songs, mostly of the Nirvana type.

Yay for the award! I answered the first 3 questions! (1) I definitely read your blog as soon as I have time :). Also SMD’s, DIY Mama. Another is SomiSpeaks because we’ve known each other since I started blogging. I appreciate blogs that are personal. (2) Grammy’s because I’d rather wear a funky outfit than a ballgown to the Oscars. (3) Scary movies that involve ghosts and children.

Love your responses and thanks for responding 🙂
I’d rather wear a ballgown. I can’t pull off funky. My choice is the Golden Globes because it’s TV AND movies, I get to wear a ballgown, and there’s drinking. Win-win-win.

I agree, the living room is the best spot! Perfect for lounging and watching TV and eating! LOL at the Dean of the college story!

YAYYYYY! Love it. Your answers made me laugh, as usual. Your embarrassing moment reminded me of a time a coworker of mine asked the new CEO of our company “what he did here.” She almost died when he told her who he was. Thanks for the shout-out and for participating 🙂

Thanks for nominating me! It was fun!
If it’s a big company, I feel for her. You just can’t know what everyone looks like.

I always love these types of posts, you learn things. Like that REM song is not my favorite either!!!I usually blog in the mornings after my workout, while I am eating breakfast and sipping coffee. So usually around 615 AM at our kitchen table. I cry every time I watch Marley and Me. I can’t help it. If you don’t cry during that movie, you have no soul.

I sobbed hysterically at the book and refuse to see the movie because I don’t want Jennifer Aniston ruining it for me.
Tonya@Budget and the Beach says
ooh I love this and think I’ll post this on Wed. Need a little change up! I hate that REM song too. I like some of their stuff, but Everybody Hurts is another nail on the chalkboard song. We have the same inspirations too. I love Amy, Tina, Kristin…all of the SNL ladies because I think they are not only funny, but smart, and pretty too…because I think there seems to be some kind of association that funny women aren’t pretty. OH, and I’ve been loving Amy Schumer’s stuff too. I think she says what all females wish they could say out loud.

Amy Schumer is fantastic. I didn’t love her when she was on Last Comic Standing but she’s come a long way and is definitely up there on my kick ass funny ladies list now.
That’s a horrid song. HORRID.

I hate, absolutely hate, that song by R.E.M. “Everybody Hurts” is another song that makes me lose it, it is so awful. My favorite quote is “This too shall pass”. You don’t know how many times those few words have helped me get through many a rough day.

Tonya said the same things. That’s a horrible, terrible song, too.
That quote is a good one. I need it right now.

I had no idea that Ali was from Long Island too! I’m going to take question number 2 and the awards show I would love to attend is the Golden Globes. There’s TV and movie people there, it seems like they serve dinner & booze during the awards, and it seems less serious than the Oscars. I’m not sure I could sit through the whole show but it could be entertaining!

Losing My Religion is a pretty terrible song, but it was Brenda and Dylan’s song so I will always love it. I love your answers. And I love your questions. I’m totally going to answer them!

Ellen Page is a great choice. She’s so quirky cool.
Grabbed my ipod; here’s the first 5 songs that played (it’s on shuffle right now):
Burn by Papa Roach
Open Eyes by Conditions
Too Far Gone – Slash
Monster You Made – Pop Evil
These Days – Bon Jovi

Love posts like this, always. I used to love “Losing My Religion” but the past few years have been so obsessed with nostalgia that it’s not even a ’90s song anymore, I hear it so much. And I can’t really stand it anymore either. Also, all the votes for Ellen Page, love that girl! Hah, I don’t think I could tell you what any of the top administrators of my alma mater look like, or even what their names are, except for the President. And I barely know what she looks like. No worries 🙂
Jana says
I have thoughts on 90s nostalgia that I will save for another day but for as much as I hate the song, I get why it’s used for that purpose. It’s still a shitty song, though.
Kateri Von Steal says
I’m with you with that REM song – I think my sister over played it – and now, whenever I hear it – I’m like nope nope nope kill me now!
And – I wouldn’t know what the dean of my college looked like either!!!
and I’ll answer a few:
1) I read yours – whenever you post. But everyday is really SMD, Nadine, Biana – and and and – I’m missing one.
3) I’m deathly afraid of LARGE spiders. Small ones are no big deal – but if I can look a spider in the eyes and it winks at me – we have a HUGE problem. haha
9) “I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy, I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it” Emerson

Large spiders are terrible. We have more than our share where we live and a few of them, I’ve thought about just giving them the house rather than deal with them. Unpleasant.
