So, about a month ago Erin and I put together this crazy awesome playlist of hairband songs (WHAT?! You missed it? Well, you’re in luck because it’s still available for your listening/reading pleasure) and then we had the idea that we should do yet another crazy awesome playlist. Except this time we decided we’d take rock band covers of non-rock band songs. Think things like Train covering Aerosmith’s “Dream On” (which I suppose is really the reverse of what we’re trying to do here). DAMN. SO GOOD. Also, you should listen to Pat Monahan singing “Love Me Two Times” with the surviving members of the Doors. Well, the ones who were surviving in 2009. I think at least another one is dead now. I’m digressing big time here, as a music fan does when discussing music but perhaps I should circle this back around to the main point of the post.
Cover songs. That Erin and I picked for you to listen to and assembled into a handy list.
Have at it and let your ears feast on these:
Mr. Big, “30 Days in the Hole” (originally by Humble Pie)
Disturbed, “The Sound of Silence” (originally by Simon and Garfunkel)
Social Distortion, “Ring of Fire” (orginally by Johnny Cash)
Guns N Roses, “Live and Let Die” (originally by Wings)
Halestorm, “Bad Romance” (orginally by Lady Gaga)
I Prevail, “Blank Space” (orginally by Taylor Swift)
Steel Panther, “Don’t Stop Believin'” (originally by Journey)
Marilyn Mason, “Sweet Dreams Are Made of This” (originally by The Eurythmics)
Seether, “Careless Whisper” (originally by Wham!)
Van Halen, “You Really Got Me” (originally by The Kinks)
Metallica, “Turn the Page” (orginally by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band)
Shinedown, “Simple Man” (originally by Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Breaking Benjamin, “Enjoy the Silence” (originally by Depeche Mode)
Fall Out Boy ft/ John Mayer, “Beat It” (originally by Michael Jackson)
To summarize:
There were a TON of great covers we left off the list in the interest of space and time and not wanting to bore anyone. But let us know–what are some of your favorite cover songs?

There’s a radio station around here that does a cover songs feature every morning. I’ve heard some amazing ones but of course I can’t remember them.

This is a more recent one, last year I think, but Adam Levine did an amazing cover of Purple Rain at Howard Stern’s birthday bash that was played on Sirius. It was really good! My husband is obsessed with Van Halen so I’ve heard You Really Got Me SO many times. I’m not a country fan but I’ve always liked the Dixie Chicks cover of Landslide.

That’s a good one, too! I like the Dixie Chicks. I haven’t heard Adam Levine’s cover but the Foo Fighters did a cover of Darling Nikki, also originally by Prince. I think his songs lend themselves to being covered.

Careless Whisper and Turn The Page are two of my favorite remakes by rock bands!

Turn the Page is one of the best covers I’ve ever heard. Not even kidding.

I’m a huge fan of covers. I’m trying to track down a Vampire Weekend Springsteen cover right now.

Manfred Mann’s cover of Blinded by the Light is quite good. I’ll have to look for the Vampire Weekend cover of his songs.

there’s a group called PostModern Jukebox who do a bunch of covers in their own way and it’s amazing!

What he did to poor Juice on SOA…
I’ll have to check out PostModern Jukebox. I like Boyce Avenue. They do amazing covers of all the types of songs.

Their cover of Blank Space brings me all the joy. There is an album where rock bands covered the soundtrack to A Nightmare Before Christmas which was pretty excellent.

I’m generally not a fan of Christmas songs but some rock band ones are tolerable.
I love that version of Blank Space!!!

Oh my gosh, Seether’s cover of Careless Whisper is one of my faves! Foo Fighter’s cover of Darling Nikki is one I totally forgot about, but that’s a good one too. Seriously, you can’t go wrong with the Foo Fighters on anything 🙂

Right?! Such a great cover!
Dave Grohl is musical gold.

This is awesome! I’ve had a covers post in my drafts for at least six months. Mine was more pop though, so this is fun! I love that Beat It cover. I also like Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm. I like Marilyn Manson’s Sweet Dreams and his version of Tainted Love too. I like the Chili Pepper’s Higher Ground and New Found Glory’s Glory of Love. Ooh! And I love The Used/My Chemical Romance cover of Under Pressure. I could go on and on… 🙂 Haha!

YES to all of those!!! We narrowed it down for the sake of not going overboard but we totally could do like 6 more of these playlists.
My last pick was actually between Alien Ant Farm’s Smooth Criminal and Fall Out Boy. I went with the latter since I think less people have heard it.

Ok so I kept scrolling through your list and I was like…if Shinedown’s version of Simple Man is not on this list then I am not even sure if we can be friends any longer. Also Sweet Dreams. YES!!! I also like this version of Shine Bright Like a Diamond https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvviVulgdms I cant find the version where they aren’t screaming through some of it but the chorus….the chorus is so much better than the original version.

So I already commented on Erin’s post, but I especially love the Marilyn Manson and Metallica covers included on this list. I’ve been wanting to do a favorite covers playlist at some point, so I thought it was fun to see what covers you two liked most. The Marilyn Manson and Metallica songs will definitely make it onto my list … They’re just so good!
