Every time I see the number 37, I think of the movie Clerks. I’m not the only one, right? RIGHT?!
Anyway. Weekly recap stuff.
- Didn’t finish any books not for work but currently reading You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine. Picked up Infinite Home, Ready Player One, the new Nickolas Butler, and an eBook (Brene Brown’s Daring Greatly). Hopefully all will be read in time for the next Show Us Your Books on November 10th. And congrats to Kate and Kristen for winning the one year anniversary giveaway!
- Started volunteering in the library at the child’s school. Told the other volunteer I like books more than people. She was not amused. #sorrynotsorry But guys, if you have a kid and you have the time, offer to go in and help the librarian. School libraries are so crucial and the librarians work really hard. No, it’s not the most glamorous or fun job like chaperoning a field trip, but I can guarantee you it’ll be appreciated.
- NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS, BITCHES!!! #LGM
- Also currently dogsitting for a little dachshund I’ve named Houseguest (not her real name). Freaked out a litte behind her owners’ backs because when they dropped her off, the brought her and her food. No dish, no bed, no toys (no leash because she’s always off leash. Her legs are so small and she’s old so it’s not like she’s going anywhere). I mean, who does that?? Here, watch my dog but I’m going to give you absolutely nothing she needs for you to take care of her for 5 days. Made me mad.
- Speaking of dogs, Barkley went to the vet for his yearly appointment. The growth on his leg that forced him into the cone of shame (if you follow me on Instagram, you saw the pathetic picture)? Easily removable through a little minor surgery. YAY!!
- Created my own personal online scheduler for appointments and phone calls. Because obviously I’m important now.
- Worked through an unexpected pantry challenge because getting to the supermarket has been near impossible. It’s amazing what you can come up with to eat when you have to use what’s in the house. Makes you realize that sometimes, maybe we have too much.
- Made my friend Mackenzie’s pumpkin dip but subsituted honey for maple syrup since we had none on hand. SO EASY. Here’s the recipe: 1 cup canned pumpkin, 1 package cream cheese (softened), 3 tbsp honey or syrup, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon. Mix (I used my electric hand mixer). We used apples as the dipper but you can really use anything you want.
- Read some fun internet things: This list is filled with some of my all-time favorites: 5 films that turned 30 this year (and why you should care). An amazing story, actually written in April but discovered by me this week, on how a Mets fan turned his pain as a fan (and trust me, it is painful to be a Mets fan) into a lucrative business. All the truths in this one: 10 reasons your house will never look like a home goods catalog. Malls: one of the staples of my teenage years. This is a cool photo projects about what malls looked like in 1989 and how they haven’t changed all that much. Major props to the chick rocking the Skid Row t-shirt.
- We’re supposed to go pumpkin picking this weeked but this about sums it up:
Hope you guys have a great weekend! I’ll be catching up on sleep and reading since no baseball and no cheerleading competitions. See you Tuesday!

Yay for Barkley news. Please send some of that good dog vibe my way, Gus is not himself and goes to the vet Monday night.
37! My girlfriend sucked 37 dicks!
Finished Some Girls Are yesterday in a few hours. Man. Man. Man.
I think a pantry challenge is in order for moi. Perhaps I’ll do that in November.

In a row?!
All the good vibes to Gus.
That book was disturbing. I’m reading Hate List right now. Equally disturbing. Mostly for the fact that both of those books could be real stories. I cannot imagine having to be a teenager now.

Hey girl, I’m glad it’s minor surgery. They tend to get bumps and lumps as they age, don’t they.
I can’t believe that little dog you’re caring for was left with nothing, essentially. Man, I hook my friend up who dog sits for us when we’re gone away somewhere, the works. That’s really fkn irresponsible.

I was so, so mad. They haven’t checked on her either. I had to text them. When we leave our guys with anyone, we call or text every freaking day. I can’t imagine not worrying.
Linda Sheridan says
Great that you are volunteering in the school library!
Boo to the dog owners!!!! We take our pups’ beds to the kennel and
their favorite treats!
My dad always says “we have too much” as in food. Sad that
people in this world go hungry! Wish we could beam our leftovers
or beam people to our table.
Someday, beaming will happen.
Enjoy your quiet weekend. We are getting a new puppy on Sunday!
Love, Steph’s Momma

Congrats on your new puppy! I’m sure there will be lots of pictures!

i have one huge reason why my house will never look like one of those homes in magazines or tv shows – i have kayla. that girl….i swear, she can destroy a room in under 2 minutes flat.

What my child can do to a room is something of magical wonder. Add in the dogs and my husband and I’m ready for my photo shoot at “I can’t believe people live like that” magazine

That’s crazy they would have you dog sit without giving your anything to take care of the dog!

I was freaking livid. LIVID. The Husband went over to their house and was able to at least get her bed. She’s been using my dogs’ toys and a makeshift food dish from a tupperware container.

BAHAHAH! Dying over you telling the other volunteer that you like books more than people. How was she NOT amused?!?! I would’ve pulled the “DID WE JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS?!” card! lol
Jana says
It’s funny because the other volunteer is the mom of a kid who is not exactly nice to my daughter. They’re frenemies, in fact. I don’t think I helped the situation.
lisacng @ expandng.com says
My pantry could use some cleaning out too! That “Why your home won’t ever be on HGTV” article makes me want to go to IKEA. That junk drawer organizing system (trays) looks useful!

It wasn’t purposeful but I’m glad I did it. Not so much with the sticker shock after restocking, though…

When we went to the book fair the other night I thought about volunteering in the library. I signed up to volunteer in class but apparently K has super teacher who doesn’t need help. I should check into the library thing.

I think it depends on the teacher. The child’s first grade teacher asked for help and used those who offered. Second grade teacher did not. I said I would when she needed me for help with things like photocopying but it’s on her to ask. I like the library. Easy, fun, and books!
Mackenzie says
Glad to hear that Barkley is doing okay 🙂 And yay for the pumpkin dip! Am thinking about volunteering at my kid’s library but I need to get used to even having a kid IN school, first. I can’t seem to get on a schedule and why do kindergarteners have homework??? I’ve been seriously floundering at life lately…

I didn’t volunteer in kindergarten except on a field trip. How is your kid in kindergarten already? Wasn’t she two like last year?
The dip is SO good. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

My friends and I used to yell “Try not to suck any d on the way through the parking lot” at each other in public places Haha! I never thought about volunteering in the library! I go in Nolan’s class once a week and that’s all I can manage right now with my schedule, but next year I’m totally getting involved with the library! Poor pup! I hope the surgery goes smoothly.

Jana says
HAHAHAHAHA!!! I would totally do that, too!
Library is so much better than the classroom. I did that for first grade. Skipped any volunteering in second.
Kristin says
YES on the pantry challenge. I’ve bought nothing but coffee/creamer/milk/flatbreads in the last ten days. I hate going to the store after work.
Yay for a healthy Barkley!
Also, there are people who consider field trips fun?? Props to you. Our school libraries rarely get the attention they deserve. I’ve found that having incentive programs or accelerated reader requirements keep kids reading…here, we don’t do that.

People think it’s fun because they get to spend time with their kids. I do not enjoy the field trips but I’ll offer. I know teachers need help.
Our school does AR. My daughter loves it but I think she’s in the minority. Most kids think it’s a chore.

I think it’s so wonderful that you’re able to volunteer at the school library! Great PSA too. School librarians deserve a lot more thanks and help than they get. Also, thank you so much for that Home Goods catalog article! Always a good reminder. Have a great and restful weekend 🙂

I am glad I get to do it, too. Benefits of working from home. Don’t know why I didn’t think of it before this year.

We are going to try to carve pumpkins this weekend. Try. We just got them from the grocery store. Much easier.
I also like books more than people.

Volunteering at the library sounds like my kind of fun!!! And so does that pumpkin dip, yum! I cant believe the breakfast club is 30 years old. Such an awesome movie. And malls really do look the same!

It is amazing what we will find in our pantry when we are trying to avoid grocery shopping at all costs. Haha! Yeah to no comps and you can spend some time reading. How did the librarian not agree with you??

It’s not that I was avoiding it; I just didn’t have a chance to go. The librarian was busy when I said it. The other volunteer didn’t have much of a sense of humor.

yayyyy thanks again for the linkup and giveaway!!
good to hear about Barkley. and yes books better than people every day. haha. i will keep that in mind when i have kids to volunteer at the library!

I feel like when I bring my dogs somewhere to stay with someone, they practically move in. That said, I OFTEN forget their dog bowls because I’m so distracted trying to remember the food and the pills and the beds and the leashes and muzzle. I don’t bring toys because my sitters already have toys and I figure my dogs/extra beds are enough clutter without the toys.

I love that you’re volunteering at your daughter’s school library! My mother-in-law recently started volunteering at one of the branches of our public library, and I’ve been seriously considering it as well. I used to volunteer once a week (occasionally more often if they needed me) for my local hospice chapter, but that got too emotionally draining once my grandfather passed away. I’ve been feeling like I need to do something again, and the library seems like the perfect fit. I just need to figure out how to incorporate it into my current schedule.
I find myself digging through the pantry in an effort to use things up at least one week a month. If nothing else, we literally always have black beans, rice, and green chilies. People have teased us about the crazy amounts of these things we keep on hand, but whatever … You can totally make a meal out of that!
