Last week I was on Charlotte NC for FinCon15, which is a conference for personal finance bloggers and those in the finance industry to connect and learn and also drink. I mostly did that last one because I am not a finance blogger (obviously). But I did return home with some new friends, great memories, a bag of white chocolate Oreo popcorn (thanks, Tonya!), and a horrible, terrible cold that has been kicking my ass all week.
As a result, I haven’t done much except sit on my couch and so this week, I bring to you all the excitingish things that happened from said couch:
-
- finished $2 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America and started Radiant Angel. I also picked up Did You Ever Have a Family and discovered a new bookish podcast, Overdue. Reading doesn’t take a break because you’re sick.
- binge watched “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” so you don’t have to (trust me. The movie? Excellent. TV show? Abomination. Hopefully on purpose). I started “Hand of God” and you should get on that one. And kudos to Netflix for scoring “How to Get Away with Murder” so I can finally catch up on that.
- ordered a whole bunch of storage containers so I can start prepping my weekday lunches ahead of time. Lunch annoys me and I’d rather just take the headache and decision making out of it. Speaking of which, what’s your favorite make ahead lunch? Let me know in the comments.
- booked my room for FinCon16 which happens to be in San Diego next year and also I’ll be doing another mentoring session which I love to do so hooray for that!
- made a list of fall projects I want to work on. They’re easy and not too crafty so I should be able to complete them (I’m obviously still on a completion high from the Literary Ladies challenge). Would you guys want to know what I’m planning to do?
- watched a YouTube video on how to do an upside down French braid because #cheerhair. I *might* have cursed at the child’s coach when she announced this was the style because really, what the fuck? Why is this necessary? They don’t score points for hair.
- read some internet stuff: How to lose weight in four easy steps (it’s not what you think). 10 ways to stay healthy while working from home (really great tips that I definitely need to employ. Especially the one about getting dressed). This story about a man who embezzled $8.7M and hid for 6 years on the Appalachian Trail (there’s a link to the longform story at the bottom of the post I linked to). Why women love crime (guilty. Also, the woman who wrote the article, Megan Abbott, has written a bunch of book, some of which I’ve read. No real point to that fun fact except it is fun).
- laughed at this:
I was more productive from my couch than I thought! Who knew? Anyway, have a great weekend! See you on Tuesday (oh, I think I’m done with Monday posts for now. I struggle with Monday appropriate topics).

i pretty much eat the same thing every day for lunch: baked chicken with a huge salad and tons of veggies. sometimes i’ll make a batch of greek quinoa with a bunch of chopped veggies in there. sometimes the protein will vary and i’ll have braised ribs.

I do like the idea of Greek quinoa with chicken. Maybe I’ll rotate that in with the mac and cheese and soups I have planned.

Upside down french braid? I think cheer coach would be doing hair if K were in cheer. Who knows how to do these things??

Clearly not me, which is why I watched a YouTube video on how to do it. Some of the girls have older sisters who can do it for them. We’re not that fortunate. Sunday morning should be a blast getting this done!
Tonya@Budget and the Beach says
I’m not even sure what an upside down french braid is. What if the kid has short hair? Sorry you have a cold. I’m klutzy this week. I think everyone has some kind of post fincon-something.

I liked that the one woman called it “FinCon flu”. It’s ridiculous already though. I want my breathing back!
There are so many issues with this hairstyle I don’t even know where to start.

Sorry about the cold, Jana. Hope it gets better! I’d love to see your list of to-dos for the fall! Hope you can master that braid. Geez.

I’ve been practicing. It’s UGLY. But it gets the job done so that’s good enough for me.

Glad you had a great time at FinCon!
Wait, seriously? They require a certain hairstyle for cheerleaders now? Thats…a bit much, no?
For lunch I either just graze if I’m home (hummus and veggies, apple and PB, maybe throw together a salad) or eat leftovers. I always have dinner leftovers because I live alone so that’s the best way for me to make sure I have lunch. I also like to make something like a quiche or pot of turkey chili or something on Sunday and then just work on that for the week for lunches. That only works if you don’t get bored eating the same thing every day though!

It’s up to each coach how they want the girls to style their hair. I can’t even anymore with the decisions her coaches make.
I’m totally fine eating the same thing every day. Or making two things and alternating. I just really hate deciding what to have for lunch. My husband usually takes the leftovers, which is fine, but it leaves me floundering and I just pick all day long instead of eating a meal. Not so healthy for me since my snack choices aren’t always the greatest.

Note to self: do not have food in your mouth when reading Jana’s posts 🙂 Seriously, between your comment on the upside-down French braid and the e-card you posted, I almost choked on my lunch! That e-card is EVERYTHING, by the way; still laughing on that one. Sorry you are under the weather, I hope you feel better soon 🙂

My nutritionist gave me a great suggestion that I’ve been following for a month for lunch planning. For dinner, make a little more and cut your portion size to a little less. Use that amount for your lunch the next day. It’s helped, so I’m really only meal prepping once (dinner), and not twice.

San Diego sounds awesome!
Yes to wanting to know your fall projects.
So this guy we were on a river cruise with in Grand Teton was a freaking FORENSIC SCIENTIST. He was retired and enjoying it so I tried to limit my MANY questions but it was SO HARD. He says CSI makes him want to throw a brick at the TV but that Patricia Cornwall has it pretty real.

Favorite make ahead lunch: cold cooked quinoa, fresh red pepper, fresh cucumber, feta, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing! SO GOOD!

I definitely made this for my lunches except I swapped peppers for tomatoes. And added a little chicken but I know you don’t do that 🙂

I imagine cheer hair to be the worst part. Hope you are feeling better, I have been couch surfing this weekend too. Lots of reading and TV.

The hair isn’t too bad until it gets complicated like what they want this season.
Reading and TV is my favorite way to recover from being sick.

Whoa whoa whoa….white chocolate oreo popcorn? Say what???? I totally pinned that procrastination ecard a few days ago because it speaks the truth! Also no beer? That shouldn’t have been number one. I closed out of that article and said fuck that. Hahahaha. I am obsessed with SVU and Chicago PD, and the Evanovich novels…so clearly I like crime stuff too! I hope you are feeling better.

Crime stuff…I can’t quit it. It’s my go-to when I don’t know what else to read or watch.
The popcorn was AMAZING. I think we’re going to order some online because it was that good.

Holy moly I think you may be more productive from your couch than I am in healthy life!
Sorry to hear you got sick. I caught something when I got home, too, but assumed my kids had given it to me as they weren’t feeling great while I was away. Still fighting it, but functional. Maybe I should try from the couch functional, though. I like the idea better. 🙂

Couch functional is the wave of the future so you should get in on the ground floor for that! It’s amazing how much you can do with a laptop and a smartphone.
The FinCon cold kicked my ass. I’m glad it’s finally almost over.
