*I figured that since a third grade writing assignment was the inspiration for this post, I’d title it like a third grader. Writer’s block tip: When stuck for an idea, use your child’s homework*
The Child recently had an assignment at school where she had to write a persuasive (or opinion. I can’t remember but probably opinion) essay on whether she prefers being a kid or whether she’d like to be an adult. Because she’s 9 she picked being a kid. Her main reasons? You don’t have to pay bills or run boring errands.
She has a valid point. That stuff sucks.
But, given the choice between being a kid or being an adult, I’m picking an adult. Every. Single. Time. Why? Simple.
As an adult, I get to do what I want, when I want.
Swearing with abandon.
Beer.
Eating cold leftover Chinese food for breakfast. Or pizza. Or ice cream. Or Doritos.
Doing things. Or not doing things.
My money, my choices.
Wearing whatever I feel like (oh, and that school who’s trying to regulate what parents wear to AM dropoff? Fuck you).
Having zero tolerance for crappy people and not having to force myself to be around them.
Not giving a shit.
Having to go somewhere simply because someone tells me to.
Voting.
A driver’s license that doesn’t require someone else to be in the car with me. Or time limits on restrictions on where I can go.
Making my own, independent decisions.
Books that don’t require a book report, analyzing symbolism, or general crappiness. Basically, reading for fun.
Being able to understand just how awesome it is to shirk every single responsibility you have in favor of a nap and a good binge watching session.
I realize that adulting is hard. It sucks at times. Responsibilities are no fun and getting up early to go to work can suck a fat one and watching my money go to bills and cleaning the house and cooking dinner get repetitive and exhausting.
But given the choice between doing all the crappy adult stuff and living life as a kid, I’m living as an adult.
We have beer here.
P.S. A whole bunch of adults contributed to this really great post with instructions on adulting. I’m one of them.

The eat anything you want for breakfast thing has always one of my favorite things about being an adult. I can tell K no she can’t have cookies for breakfast and then eat some for breakfast because I’m an adult. 🙂

I think adulting is such a funny word people are using lately. I swing back and forth all the time on this. I wish I had the ability to sleep and not feel as if I had as many cares as I did when I was a kid. To just piss the day away without thinking of to-do lists and errands, and then I swing back to liking being an adult for those reasons you mentioned, because I can do those things I mentioned about being a kid if I just let myself, ya know?

I do like the beer but a big part of me agrees with your kid on this one! Maybe that’s because all my bills are due on the 1st and it’s literally like $3k leaving my account at once. Ask me in two weeks.

I’m all about wearing what you want when you’re dropping off your kid and not leaving the car. It’s when you walk your child to school in pajamas that I start to side-eye. There is no reason why you need to wear spongebob pj pants when walking your child into their classroom and talking to their teacher.
And sometimes I look at kids and just feel bad for them. Especially kids today. They can’t even eat candy in school here because it’s against the rules.

I would always always always choose adulthood – specifically late 30s/40s because the 20s were a tight struggle.

Agree! I am way happy to be almost 60 with my kids all being college graduates. I almost want to wish the years away so Sean was like the other 3, jobs, house, self-supporting. But , it will all be good. And I will take good care of myself so I can be an active Mommom with his kids!
Life is a highway! Love. Steph’s. Momma.

i totally agree, i’d pick being an adult as well. especially because i can eat what i want for breakfast (or any other meal) and read for fun. even though being a kid was worry free, it’s only worry free looking back on it.. as a kid / teenager, i felt like i had some legit things to worry / stress about but of course they were ridiculous and make me laugh now.

I’m so with you. I would never go back to being a kid. I would go back to being a 22 year old college student, but younger than the drinking age, no f-ing way!

1000% agree with being able to read what you want without having to basically psychoanalyze it! One of the things I hated the most during school was not having the time to read books that I enjoyed, which also explains why my husband was shocked when he found out how much I read after we got married. And they don’t call them adult beverages for nothing! They are always fun and a great part about adulting!

Yes, I love being able to eat anything I want. Granted, I still have my mother being like, “Amber!” because I usually post what I’m eating online and she sees. Still.
I love binge watching stuff too.

I like being adult, except the days where I gotta pay the bills, then I’d like to go back to being a child where Mom and Dad paid for everything. 🙂 Otherwise I’m with you 100% – being an adult is much better. I particularly like being able to do what I want, eat what I want and not need approval. As I write this – I realized that I replaced my parents with society and allow it to dictate what’s good or bad to me. I need to stop giving them that power. I’d be much happier!

I pick being an adult over being a kid any day. Although the music in the 80’s was better. Some of this crap they have on the radio nowadays, I mean jeez… ok, now I sound old 😉

hahaha “beer” lol – I’d swap that for wine but same thing right? Also there are legit some days when I wish I was a kid.

I completely agree with all of these things. I’ll admit that I complain about adulting on a semi-regular basis (mostly when I’m getting ready for a long day at work or doing household chores or paying bills), but there are a lot of perks to being an adult that I wouldn’t trade.
I love the freedom that comes with being an adult. Sure, there are responsibilities … But I can also make all of my own choices, and that’s pretty fucking great.
But what’s this about a dress code for parents at the morning drop off? I haven’t heard about that, and it seems, well, insane. Who cares what someone is wearing inside their car? I’m assuming they don’t have to get out, but even if they did, does it really matter? If it’s something they’re comfortable leaving the house in, it should be good enough to wear for a school drop off.

WHAAAT is there really a school regulating parents’ drop-off attire? That’s ridiculous. I feel myself going on a tangent…but why are people so afraid of doing a little work and occasionally addressing things on a case by case basis? I’m guessing the catalyst was one parent who doesn’t know boundaries or something…so address that one effing parent and leave the rule book alone. FFS. (I may be getting carried away because I didn’t see an article about this but going off on rants is one of the perks of adulthood I appreciate.)
Yes to voting. Yes to our own decisions. Yes to books! But most importantly, yes to beer.

being an adult rules. i tell this to kayla all the time and when she’s older, she’ll be able to do more things if she’s responsible.

I’m with you! As much as I wish for a life without responsibilities like I used to have as a kid, the pros of being an adult far outweigh the cons. I like being the boss of me. I’m a good boss. (Sometimes I’m a bitch.)
