This was not a good week, saving wise. We saved a grand total of $6.50. I’m not quite sure what happened that caused us to save such a low amount but I have a few ideas:
- I bought a lot of cheese and cheese is expensive, even at Aldi.
- I bought fish and ground beef. Although the price of these are infinitely better at Aldi than the supermarket, they are still more expensive than beans.
- I bought some items that I didn’t really need, like more lettuce and carrots. I attribute this to not looking carefully in my fridge. I have enough lettuce and carrots for at least the next 2-3 weeks. Thankfully, I really like salad.
- The amount of items on the shopping list from Aldi was significantly more than what I normally put on a shopping list. I even went through my pantry and crossed off a bunch of items and it was still a great deal of food!
- I was extremely tired when I went shopping and might have been a little more careless with my budget than I normally am. I realize this sounds like a pathetic excuse but seriously, I was exhausted.
Other than that, I really can’t figure it out. I just know that Week 6 needs to be a good week…we’re trying to hit the $150 mark and I have $44 to go. I’m thinking that a modified pantry challenge might be in order to get there. If I carefully plan, $56 should be enough to feed the three of us for one week. But I digress. Our grand total for 5 weeks of the challenge, include the starting money we had is $106 ($84 over 5 weeks of the experiment).
All told, I spent $78.01 on food from Aldi and$15.49 at the grocery store.
