Weekly six pack, 2017, v15

April 14, 2017 by Jana 10 Comments

Reading. Still plugging through Searching for John Hughes. Picked up a book from NetGalley and nothing from the library. Thanks to everyone who participated in Show Us Your Books and I plan to finish up commenting on all your posts in the next few days. The next one is May 9.

Watching. Better Call Saul and The Son. I’m not a huge TV watcher but for some reason, all the shows I like to watch will be on and/or available within the next couple of months (see: OINTB, House of Cards, Kimmy Schmidt, Silicon Valley, Fargo, and something else that’s not in my brain right now).

Listening. In the Dark. It’s a true crime podcast, with season one focusing on the kidnapping and murder of Jacob Wetterling. Season 2 is in production and I’m excited to find out what they’re covering.

Loving. The spring weather and the fact that it’s baseball season and my Mets are starting strong. They swept the Phillies this week and they’re currently in first. Granted it’s a long season and anything can happen but for now, I’m enjoying the look from first.

Trying. To wrap my head around what an absolute fucking shitshow this administration is. I am sickened–SICKENED–by the comments by the White House mouthpiece and I’m sickened that his boss does nothing about it. Then there’s Syria, the bombing of Afghanistan, the changes to internet privacy, EPA cuts, the utter bullshit that is effectively defunding Planned Parenthood, DeVos’s changes to student loan practices, nepotism, and all the rest that supports the evidence of 45’s desire to change our country from a democracy to an authoritarian state. It’s been talked about but for fuck’s sake, how much more has to happen before it’s legit? We’re supposed to be better than this. And as a country, we are. Just not our government. It feels like a Sisyphean and Herculean battle to get those responsible to realize it, and I’m frustrated and angry and my God, please make it stop.

Laughing. I saw all of these magnets when I was in Baltimore last weekend. I didn’t buy any but thinking I probably should have.  I hope you all enjoy your Easter weekend! I’ll be taking next week off for my daughter’s spring break so I’ll see you back here the following week!

Weekly six pack, 2017, v14

April 7, 2017 by Jana 12 Comments

This week was filled with drama to the 2873th degree, both personal and political, and I’m too drained to rant about either one. But I cannot anymore with this shit Congress or administration of ours and about to lose my fucking mind and it’s best if I don’t even start so my head doesn’t explode.

Let’s move on to the mundane instead. Oh, and it’s only a 5 pack this week. Sorry about that.

Reading. Finished Party of One. Started Searching for John Hughes. Requested a couple from NetGalley and picked up two (All Grown Up and I Fired God) from the library. Show Us Your Books on Tuesday!
Watching. The Netflix adaption of 13 Reasons Why. I don’t want to say too much about it but I’m curious what others think. Also, after waiting for a year, Prison Break! Let me be clear. I get it’s not that great and absolutely absurd but I love it anyway. And Wentworth Miller. *swoon*

Listening. Do you guys listen to True Crime Garage? If not, you should. Anyway, they just did a 4 part series on this one case and it was absolutely the most fascinating and interesting one they’ve done in all their episodes. It’s called The Boys on the Tracks and it has drugs and murder and corruption and Bill Clinton. If you have 4 hours, give it a listen.

Trying. Hand lettering. I actually did practice some. The results? Shameful. I need a lot more practice before I share anything publicly. I did buy some brush marker things and my art teacher neighbor said he’d help me with some techniques. I might actually be able to do something artsy! This is very exciting news!

Laughing.

Hope you guys have a great weekend! I’ll be in Baltimore for our last competition before Disney and I am thrilled that it’s the last regular one. So is my bank account.

Don’t forget about Show Us Your Books on Tuesday! Can’t wait to see what you’ve been reading!

Weekly six pack, 2017, v13

March 31, 2017 by Jana 39 Comments

Quick list this week:

Reading. Finished Brother, currently in the middle of The Roanoke Girls, picked up Searching for John Hughes. Next Show Us Your Books is April 11.

Watching. Season 4 of Orphan Black. I’m pleased Amazon finally has it available for free. Free is always for me.

Listening. S-Town. This is the weirdest, most pointless podcast I have ever listened to but holy shit was it fascinating. It probably bears a second listen to maybe pick up what I missed but right now, my feedback is that it’s a 7 part eulogy for a bizarre genius in Alabama who committed suicide.

Trying. Hand lettering, brush lettering. Whatever it’s called, I’m giving it a shot. It looks so pretty and I normally have decent handwriting so it seems like a good fit. And major props to the amazing Rebecca Jo for sending me some tutorials!

Wanting. To try these especially since my stupid gluten free stomach won’t allow me to enjoy beer anymore and vodka tonics get boring:

Laughing.

Hope you guys have a great weekend! We have our next to last regular season competition on Sunday (hooray!) and I’m contemplating using IG stories for the first time to give you an inside peek at what I go through at those (it’s…interesting and I’m not allowed to share video of the child’s squad performing or I go to cheer jail. Not even a joke).  If not this weekend, next weekend for our last one for sure. Provided I remember.

Weekly six pack, 2017, v12

March 24, 2017 by Jana 19 Comments

I’m not just riding the struggle bus this week. I’m riding the deluxe edition, except this one doesn’t have fancy seats and a bar. It’s a broken down uncomfortable piece of shit that gets me nowhere. I have no idea what’s wrong with me (well, I have a little bit of idea) and I cannot get anything done. I have no motivation and all I care to do is sleep. I’d like for this to go away. I don’t like it one bit.

Despite all of that, I’ve done a few not so exciting things this week which means OF COURSE I have to share. No politics because I can’t do it. Not today.

Reading. In the middle of The Handmaid’s Tale (not a reread; I’ve never read it and waited approximately 6 months for a copy from the library) and Bottomland. Got two new NetGalley books and none from the library. Progressing through my pile of books at a nice pace which is making me happy.

Watching. All of my money leave my wallet. This Disney competition is INSANELY expensive and we’re still attempting to go away this summer because clearly we’re stupid and of course Dobie’s due for his yearly exam in the middle of all of this and the child has outgrown all of her clothes and she needs a new bed and no joke, robbing a bank sounds like a viable option at this point.

Eating. Well, drinking is more accurate. My new favorite afternoon snack, a banana Greek yogurt peanut butter smoothie. We bought one of those little countertop smoothie makers and it is just delightful. Easier than the blender, I can drink the thing right from the cup you blend it in so less dishes, and it somehow manages to meet the protein requirements I’ve been given. Everyone wins!

Trying. A new class at my gym. It’s a boxing class, like punching and kicking, and I’ve been terrified of it for months but my accountability partner and I were peer pressured into trying it and now it’s my new favorite class. I sweat like a motherfucker but it’s worth every damn minute. I also need to now buy boxing gloves which is a sentence I never thought I’d say.

Working. With a new nonprofit. I’ve been steadily helping it grow, distribute grants, and develop programs and we’re getting to the point that we need a marketing strategy which is my biggest weakness. If anyone has any suggestions, please send them over. It’s a personal finance nonprofit that gives grants and provides education to the financial media, specifically those who do community based financial education.

Laughing.

Have a great weekend! I’ll see you guys on Tuesday when I tell another idiot on the internet why they’re wrong.

Weekly six-pack, 2017, v10

March 10, 2017 by Jana 18 Comments

What a week. Not so much from the I got a whole lot done perspective but more in the wow, this week has gone by in a fog perspective. I have approximately zero clue what I’ve done, where I’ve been, or anything at all, really. But I guess it couldn’t hurt to try to figure it out.

Reading. Finished Nearly Found and The Best of Adam Sharp. Started Difficult Women. Got one new book from NetGalley and none from the library. Still working on my priority list and once I get through the books mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’m comfortable starting request library books to read along with the NetGalley ones. And don’t forget, Show Us Your Books is on Tuesday!

Attending. Meetings. A lot of meetings. Mostly over the phone, which is nice, but some have been in person and that’s no fun. Plus they leave me feeling drained and not wanting to talk to anyone. Even more than usual.

Celebrating. My kid. She had a hell of a week, starting with winning a bid to compete at Disney World in May and ending with straight As, yet again, on her report card. This was like the 4th or 5th consecutive report card with straight As. We don’t pressure her to do anything except her best so the fact that her grades are all self-motivated makes it even more amazing.

Using. Remember how I talked about my introvert activism? Well now you can add lazy activism to the list. I learned about this website that will MAIL THE POSTCARDS FOR YOU. You type your message, pay a small fee for the postcard plus postage, and they do the work. There are now no excuses to not contact your representatives. NONE.

Watching. Big Little Lies. When I found out they were adapting this into a TV show, apprehension took over. Liane Moriarty isn’t exactly a spectacular writer but this was an excellent book and we all know what can happen in that situation. But it’s on HBO, which is helpful, and wow! I’m pretty damn impressed at how good it is! It’s true to the book and incredibly well done and well acted. I’m glad it’s a limited run, though, because it would absolutely start to suck beyond the 7 episodes.

Laughing.

That’s it for this week. Hope you all have a great weekend! I’ll be at a cheer competition on Sunday and doing absolutely nothing on Saturday except reading and sitting on my couch. Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday for Show Us Your Books!
