All these things that I’ve done

February 23, 2015 by Jana 32 Comments

A special thank you to The Killers for today’s post title as I have had this song stuck in my head for days.

When I wrote my 40 by 40, I struggled a bit with coming up with a list because, thus far, I’ve been fortunate and I have done, seen, and been to a good number of places. Don’t be mistaken, there’s still a ton left to do and see and try but I have a pretty good list going and, as part of my Choose Your Own Adventure Challenge, I said I’d write it down. So I did. And, as proof and accountability and all that jazz, I’m sharing it with you guys. 37 things for 37 years I’ve been alive.

Oh, sorry for the lack of pictures but we’ve been living in our house for 18 months and for the life of me, I still cannot find my photo albums. But I assure you, I’m not lying. If I were, this list would be way more interesting.

37 years

  1. Traveled to France and saw all the things including the Louvre, the Notre Dame, L’Arc de Triomphe, Carcassone, Nice, the Palace of Versailles, and I spent a night on one of those overnight train things
  2. Stood on a glacier (and drank water from said glacier)
  3. Slept on a Native American reservation
  4. Been published (in a compilation with other writers, in an eBook about writer’s block. Not a novel)
  5. Had a stereotypical spring break in Cancun
  6. Been to both the East and West parts of Canada. Not the middle. (Is there even anything in the middle?)
  7. Traveled to a number of islands including Aruba, the Bahamas, and Jamaica
  8. Participated in the Conch Republic Independence Day celebrations, including the mock Navy battle in the harbor
  9. Speaking of Key West, I’ve also seen the sunset at Mallory Square
  10. Ridden in a 1954 Bentley
  11. Visited the Grand Canyon
  12. And Niagara Falls
  13. Went white water rafting on the Snake River
  14. Camped at Yellowstone and Yosemite
  15. Met a celebrity
  16. Interviewed a celebrity
  17. Been an extra on a TV show (Romper Room)
  18. Seen Broadway shows
  19. Visited all the major attractions in California including Alcatraz, Lombard Street, the San Diego Zoo, and Hearst Castle
  20. Attended a MLB playoff game
  21. Won a beer pong tournament
  22. Hiked in Bryce Canyon
  23. Gotten my Master’s degree (I used to be smart)
  24. Learned another language
  25. Given a speech in public
  26. Quit a job I hated
  27. Made pie from scratch, including the crust
  28. Performed a Zumba routine on stage
  29. Cooked Thanksgiving dinner by myself
  30. Attended TV show tapings
  31. Seen my favorite band in concert (4 times!)
  32. Visited Disney World and Disney Land
  33. Been to Bourbon Street (aka the most disgusting street in all the land)
  34. Been to a music festival
  35. Sat in club box seats at an NFL and MLB game
  36. Played with and fed penguins
  37. Had a pinup photo shoot (these pictures have never, nor will they ever, see the light of day)

Looking at the list, I’m pretty proud of what I’ve done so far and I’m so excited for what’s still to come. Should be a fun few years until I’m 40 and then beyond.

Now you go. Tell me some of the things you’ve done!

About that time I went to New Orleans

September 24, 2014 by Jana 17 Comments

As you guys know, I was in New Orleans last week for a blogging conference where my blogger mentoring program was hosting a session. For those who are interested, the session went really well despite my atrocious public speaking skills and thankfully for those who attended, I only spoke for a grand total of 5 minutes, 2 of which included announcing raffle winners and then later on, dismissing the session.

I’m pretty sure public speaking is a skill I should work on. And thanks to the conference, I have someone who offered to help me. Conference perk #1.

Conference perk #2 is free stuff, of which I managed to accumulate with efficiency. I didn’t pick up any t-shirts (most of them don’t fit over my humongous hooters anyway and the ones that do have writing on the chest. I actively avoid shirts with writing that go just across the chest) or other odds and ends that would just gather dust. I did pick up some cool shit including what’s pictured below: a blogging book, a blog planner, 2 Starbucks gift cards, a Google Chromecast, Kansas City seasoning that is apparently really good but makes no sense as a gift at a conference in New Orleans but whatever, some sort of portable lithium phone battery, and a little holder thing for your phone when it’s charging and you have nowhere to place it. photo (4)

Can’t go wrong with free shit, amirite?

While I learned a whole lot about blogging, particularly Pinterest, and I’m crazy excited to start implementing some of the strategies I learned, and work on two new collaborative projects, it’s much more interesting to find out what I did outside of the conference.

So let’s get to that. Besides sleep deprivation and drinking gallons of Guinness, perk #3 is getting to sightsee. Here’s a rundown of the highlights:

  • Bourbon Street is probably the single most disgusting place I have ever been. Not the behavior of the people, because I definitely saw worse in Cancun on Spring Break in college (my behavior on that trip is for another time). No. It is the most vile, smelly, filthy street in the history of time. It’s what I imagine the inside of a sewer is like. Every morning, they have to HOSE THE STREET DOWN because it’s that disgusting. I don’t even want to know the amount, or types, of fluids that seep into that street each night. That said, it’s definitely an experience and I’m glad I saw it first hand.
  • There’s a church near Jackson Square (with a statue of Andrew Jackson that led to an interesting discussion about Abraham Lincoln and his horse riding abilities) that is one of the oldest churches in the US, and the site of a 1987 papal visit. Outside the church is a whole bunch of men and ladies doing tarot card readings. It’s an interesting sight.
  • Thanks to a ghost tour that focused heavily on vampires, I now know the proper way to kill a vampire should this become an issue. It’s a pretty specific skill set and if the tour guide is right, we should be way more worried about a vampire apocalypse than a zombie one. Fortunately, I’m prepared now, and that’s comforting.
  • I participated in some traditional New Orleans activities like riding a cable car, listening to jazz music, eating beignets and jambalaya, watching part of a Saints game, and walking around part of the Garden district which involved a lot of getting lost and maybe also a convenient store that sold beer, tablets, had a working humidor, and a fried chicken bar. Because of course it did.
  • I got to see Ann Rice’s house. And Nicholas Cage’s old house which was a stop on the ghost tour and really, some of the most disturbing shit I have ever heard in my life occurred in that house in the 1800s. I did not get to see John Goodman’s house which made me sad because I really, really need to know where Dan Conner lives.

But the best part of the conference was the people. Attending a conference with a focus on financial bloggers is weird since I’m not a personal finance blogger, although many of the attendees are close friends from my days when I did write about money and it’s always nice to spend time with them. It’s an intense 4-5 days and when I leave, I feel the same sense of sadness that I felt when I left sleepaway camp or when a year of college ended. The friendships are not like any others I have, and if my non-finance blogger friends went to this conference, too, I don’t know that I’d even be able to leave.

However, in addition to seeing old friends (and missing the ones that couldn’t make it), I inevitably meet new people who up the awesomeness quotient tenfold. This year was no different. Not only did I get to meet one of my blogging heroes, Jeff Goins, but I met some others who defy adjectives. No joke, when you can talk to someone who can make you cry laughing with a story of shipping an alligator head from New Orleans to Utah and then seamlessly transition to talking about physics and Hemingway, you know you’ve struck gold (and, just in case he’s reading: Hi, Nate!).

spending time quote

And that’s how it was for most of the conference. Meeting and talking and socializing and laughing and having a great time with some fascinating people, not knowing if you’ll see them next year or if you’ll keep in touch or if you just need to soak up every minute and file it away your memory box. It’s a bittersweet feeling, but an amazing one nonetheless.

One blogger told me that I’m basically the only one who goes to the conference and never talks to anyone about blogging; I just talk to them about them. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If I had to sum up FinCon14, it’d be this: Come for the information. Stay for the people.

10 things to know before visiting the South

September 15, 2014 by Jana 17 Comments

This is the first in a series of guest posts from some of my very kind, generous, and talented blogger friends who are covering for me while I’m at a blog conference in New Orleans, where my blog mentoring program is putting on a live session the final day of the conference. While I plan to do some sightseeing and maybe a little drinking, I will actually be doing real stuff, too!

First up is my good friend Nadine, who blogs at Life by Nadine Lynn. Her use of ecards is spectacular, and she makes me laugh almost every single day. She loves beer even more than I do and I wish I lived closer to her so we could hang out. Saying that is probably the only time I’ve ever said I wish I could visit Alabama.

Since Jana is in New Orleans, I thought I should give her some pointers on “southern things” from a Yankee living in the South’s prospective (Jana’s note: I live in Delaware, which thinks it’s the South but really it’s not. Someone needs to tell the natives that).

1. Y’all – This should be obvious, but y’all is plural for you all or you guys. All y’all means a large group. I myself still cannot say this word properly, but I don’t cringe when I hear it anymore. I sort of like it. Shhhh don’t tell anyone!

2. Bless Your Heart – Southerner’s find it rather rude and inappropriate to call people stupid or idiots. Instead, they say phrases like “Oh, bless your heart!” Really it is like saying, “fuck you…you are dumb”.

3. College Football – It doesn’t matter if you don’t give a damn about college football, you MUST pick a team. The rivalries down here are real y’all! And the SEC is the only conference as far as we are concerned. I mean, we have our own network!

4. Sweet Tea – When you order your tea in the south, you are going to get it sweet unless you specify un-sweet. Don’t you dare say how gross sugar water tea is; there will be none of that nonsense! Also while we are on the topic, instead of pop or soda….everything is Coke.

5. BBQ – The south is very serious about their BBQ. BBQ is not created equal. Don’t even try to compare Carolina BBQ to Memphis BBQ to Alabama BBQ. IT’S NOT THE SAME!

6. Mason Jars – Everything tastes better in a mason jar. Don’t question the logic! They can even be used as décor too!

7. Initials/Monograms – They are on everything!

8. Attire – Down here, you sort of are on display all the time. Everywhere you go you want to consider it a fashion show. You should see all the dresses that get worn to football games. What happened to team sweatshirts? Not down south!

9. Mosquitos – They are the size of a small bird down here. Don’t be alarmed. Actually, be very alarmed!

10. Humidity – It might only be in the 80’s or 90’s, but with the humidity at 34958869058%….let’s just say you have no clue what hot means yet!

Well Jana, I hope you have an awesome time in New Orleans! It sounds like you might need a passport to travel below the Mason Dixon line, but you indeed do not!

Make sure you follow Nadine on Twitter and on Instagram

My top 10 vacation moments (and a giveaway)

August 1, 2013 by Jana 5 Comments

I’ve been lucky. I’ve had lots of opportunities to travel and explore and see different things. However, when I was asked to write about the most exciting vacation I’ve ever taken, I drew a blank. I just couldn’t. Because they’ve all been exciting in their own way.

Instead, I decided to write a list of my top 10 exciting vacation moments (in no particular order except the way they popped into my head). For your entertainment, I’ve also decided to include the year, the location, and my age at the time of said moment.

Let’s get started. Jana’s Top 10 Vacation Moments in No Particular Order:

  1. Walking the plank of a pirate ship (age 10, 1988, Aruba)
  2. Participating in a toilet paper/rotten egg/tomato fight with the Coast Guard, honoring Key West’s brief cessation from the U.S. (age 28, 2006, Key West, FL)
  3. Standing on a glacier (age 16, 1993, somewhere in Canada)
  4. Sleeping on a Native American reservation and all that goes with it, excluding the trauma of the porta-potty but including sitting on rocks watching wild horses frolic (age 16, 1993, Wyoming)
  5. Visiting Carcassonne, an ancient town built into a fort (age 17, 1994, France)
  6. Achieving second place in a beer chugging contest (age 22, 2000, Cancun). Note: I am particularly proud of this one. It was beer in a yard glass.
  7. Accidentally attending a funeral at the Notre Dame (age 17, 1994, France)
  8. Watching my daughter’s face the whole time (age 34, 2012, Disney World)
  9. Winning money in the casino on our honeymoon despite my husband’s poor advice (age 26, 2004, Bahamas) Note: I almost never gamble so this was a big deal. I don’t even participate in football or basketball pools.
  10. Staying an a house with an elevator and a wrap around porch on the top of the house (age 31, 2009, Outer Banks, NC)

So that’s just the top 10. I could have included seeing the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls or whitewater rafting or almost drowning in a kayak (don’t judge me) or seeing a woman pee in the middle of the street in Santa Barbara or a whole host of other moments that remind me why going on vacation is so amazing (well, the peeing thing was kind of gross but 20 years later, I still remember it). I’d love to hear about your favorite or most exciting vacation moment so please let me know in the comments below (this is also important to what’s coming up next).

August Blog GiveawayAnd now, something exciting–a giveaway. Of money. All you have to do it fill in the entry form below and you’re entered. Simple, right? Oh, and did I mention first prize is $500? That’s a lot of money to put towards a vacation (or anything else you want).
