Bucket list: Pioneer style

March 13, 2014 by Jana 11 Comments

Bucket lists have never been my thing. I don’t like to think about death and dying and creating a bucket list makes me confront that. I don’t want to dwell on all the shit I’d like to do before I die and also, if I don’t accomplish them, how will that make me feel? Probably pretty crappy and if I’m on my deathbed, is that really something I need hanging over me? No. So I opt to leave bucket lists alone.
someecards.com - There's a hole in my bucket list.

However, when it comes to this project, it has a shelf life. While the skills acquired and lessons learned will stick with me, and I don’t intend on leetting them go once I’m done with the project, the project itself will end. Die, if you will. And there are some items I’d like to accomplish before that happens. A pioneer project bucket list.

This is what it looks like:

  1. Sew a complete set of cloth napkins along with a matching tablecloth. I love the idea of having a tablecloth on my dining table for so many reasons, the least of which is that my table has tile and grout that are a pain the ass to clean. It’ll also make the room like so much nicer and cleaner. Plus, the cloth napkins are less wasteful.

Found this on Amazon. If sewing one doesn't work, this is my backup plan.

  2.  Open an Etsy store. Pioneer women tended to the home but at times, they also had to help contribute financially to the family. I’m no different. I have a few ways in mind to do this and one of them is to open an Etsy store. I have the idea, the name, and the list of products to sell. Now I just have to get to work.
  3. Fill my freezer and shelves in my garage with food I canned. Not going to lie. Canning intimidates the hell out of me. I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m terrified that I’m going to ruin the food. This is even more daunting because I plan on canning what we grow (following in true pioneer fashion) and if I mess up, it’s gone. I can’t just instantly regrow more. Scary stuff.

    For more than just crafts.
    For more than just crafts.
  4. Quilt a lap blanket. I have no problem taking a shortcut and making no sew blankets (in fact, I think I prefer this. Quicker, and I can actually do it). But the pioneers used quilts. Which means I need to try to sew one. I am almost as awful with a sewing machine as I am with knitting needles which is why I’m opting for a lap quilt instead of a bed-sized one. I figure it’ll be decidedly less stressful (and more doable) if I’m focused on a smaller quilt.

Items you will not see on my list: shoot a gun. Ride a horse. Milk a cow. Raise chickens. Use an outhouse.

It’s not that I’m opposed to the concept of those things. (Well, that’s a lie. I’m opposed to outhouses and their modern brethern, the port-a-potty. Because ew. And majorly unsanitary.) It’s that I have aversions to all of them and this is honestly why I realize I’d most likely be a terrible pioneer. Then again, if I were a real pioneer, I’d have no choice but to do all of them and I’d probably get over myself. I also wouldn’t know any different. So, really, I’m thankful that I’m not living 150 years ago.

As for my bucket list, I wanted to make it projects that are achievable yet complicated enough that I’ll feel like I did something truly pioneer-esque. Because those guys did not have it easy. I want to pay homage to them as best I can without making myself uncomfortable.

Do you have a bucket list? What items are on it?

31 Steps for Feeling Happier, Step 11: Finish a project

October 11, 2013 by Jana 2 Comments

20131006-115008.jpgWhat did you read yesterday? I read a couple of chapters in Jeannette Walls’s latest The Silver Star. I loved her other two books (The Glass Castle and Half-broke Horses. If you have not read them, do so) and this one is great so far. I have a tendency to latch on to authors that I like and read everything they write. I’ve done it with a number of authors; Jeanette Walls is the latest to make it to that illustrious list. Can I also say that I love that she was a gossip (maybe entertainment) columnist before she started writing these wonderful books? It just shows that you never know what talent is lurking behind something seemingly superficial.

I also made the ambitious decision to buy the new, very comprehensive Jim Henson biography. It’s around 600 pages and I’m pretty sure I’m not getting through it by the time it has to go back to the library. I want to take my time reading it since, you know, it’s a biography about JIM HENSON, and I’d rather have it on hand.

But that’s enough about books.

Can you believe it’s day 11 already? This month is flying by. Which is good because Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I can’t wait to get to it. It also means that we’ll get through Halloween (I’m making my daughter’s costume this year. Expect a post on that) and the rest of fall cheerleading (my daughter cheers at football games. Outdoors. One of the main reasons I don’t like football is because it’s outside in the cold. And I now I have to sit outside while my kid cheers. It’s unpleasant. Although, it’s been unusually warm this fall so it hasn’t been too bad. I’m digressing). It also means that we’re starting to spend more time indoors, making it perfect timing for finishing projects. finishing

Which leads me to today’s step towards happiness: complete an unfinished project.

I have at least a dozen unfinished projects in my house. From a mismatched set of cloth napkins that I’m sewing to hanging pictures on my wall to finally doing a big batch of freezer cooking, there are a minimum of 12 projects in various stages of completion lurking in my house. Every time I look at one of them, I get upset and stressed because I’ve either abandoned the project, don’t have time to work on it, ran out of materials and don’t have the cash available, or have some other ridiculous excuse for why I stopped. Then I start getting down on myself that I never finish anything that I start and you all know where it goes from there.

BUT!

When I do finish something, I feel great. I feel empowered and encouraged to finish another way. Then I feel happy not only because I finished but because I finished. I can’t wait to share the fruits of my labor. I can relax know that that project is done. One less item to worry about, one less sad looking pile of materials in the corner. One less reason to berate myself.

And one more notch in my happiness belt.

That’s how I want you to feel today. I want you to feel happy that you took the initiative, carved out the time, and completed a project you abandoned. It doesn’t have to be crafty. It can be as simple as ordering pictures for a frame (and then filling the frame) or hanging a shadow box over the toilet paper in your bathroom (I saw it on Pinterest and I am in love with the idea). Just pick one project you’ve been meaning to finish and commit to finishing it. Today.

You’ll be so glad you did.

(Also, whenever I see the word “today” and it’s emphasized the way I did it, I automatically start singing Neil Diamond’s “America” in my head. It’s involuntary.)

Pinterest Project Tuesday: Chocolate chip cookie dough fudge

August 6, 2013 by Jana 5 Comments

This week I made chocolate chip cookie dough fudge. Because why not?

I used this recipe, which was linked from a pin I found. Here’s what happened when I made it (I take terrible pictures. I apologize in advance for every post like this that I do):

Fudge collage Starting from 1:

  1. All the ingredients (you might have also seen this if you follow me on Instagram)
  2. Mixing together brown sugar, white sugar, and butter in my stand up mixer (I love my stand up mixer. It’s my favorite thing in my kitchen. Also it was free, courtesy of my mother in law).
  3. Melting butter with brown sugar and half and half. I think salt might also have been added.
  4. All dry ingredients, including powdered sugar (I swear that’s what it is. I know it looks like a prop from Scarface).
  5. Dry ingredients mixed with the melted butter concoction.
  6. Adding in chocolate chips.
  7. The whole mixture in the prepped pan, ready to go in the fridge.
  8. Finished product. Arranging food displays is clearly not a career path.

So that’s it. Like most foods I make, it looks ugly but tastes delicious. A warning: this is really sweet and a little goes a long way.

Did you make anything from Pinterest this week? How did it go?

Pinterest Project Tuesday: Homemade dog ice cream

July 30, 2013 by Jana 8 Comments

I love Pinterest. There are ideas and projects on there that I never thought I could do and some that I knew I could do if only I had the right directions. And all the creative people out there provide just that. So, beginning this week, I’m going to have a regular post, on Tuesdays, documenting the a different craft projects or recipe I try each week.

Up first: homemade dog ice cream.

I have 2 dogs. Here they are. Please bear in mind that while they look similar, they are actually 2 different breeds. Barkley is a Bichon Frise and Dobie is a Bichon/Poodle/we’re not sure what else. This information is completely irrelevant to anything except my clear need to overshare:

Barkely Dobie

They like to eat treats, particularly doggie ice cream. But when we’ve bought it there have been two problems: 1) that shit is expensive and 2) they fight over it like mad men. Also they eat the cups when it’s done and maybe get a little crazy when we take it away. To rectify all the issues, I had the brilliant idea to make my own. After all, how hard could it be?

So, like I always do, I took to Pinterest and found this recipe. Here’s photo evidence of me actually bringing it to life:

putting it together

The procedure: 1) All the ingredients: banana, 32 oz container of plain yogurt, 2 tbsp peanut butter, 2 tbsp honey. Not pictured: the cooking spray I used on the measuring spoon so the peanut butter and honey didn’t stick. 2) Mixing bowl, masher, measuring spoon, and ice tray. 3) A mashed banana. I think it looks gross, too. 4) Everything mixed together plus my electric mixer because a spoon just wasn’t doing a good enough job.

When everything was done, it looked like this (and note I had to add an extra ice cube tray because I grossly underestimated just how much this would make and I wound up throwing some out anyway because it was too much and I angered the husband beast by using up two ice cube trays already. The man loves his ice):

finished ice cream

Fortunately, the ice cream was a success. I kind of figured it would be because my dogs aren’t exactly that picky about what they eat (seriously, they eat garbage and socks. And one poor oven mitt). Also, though, and slightly more disturbing, is that my husband and daughter ate it, too. And enjoyed it! (I do have a picture of that but I’m not posting it because I feel that is better suited for private shame.)

dogs and ice cream

The best part about this is that there’s no fighting due to individual servings and we don’t have to wrestle a plastic cup away from them. However, should you choose to make this, I recommend you have your dog or dogs eat the ice cream on a hard, easy to clean surface because that shit is messy!

Not including freezing time, this took me maybe 10 minutes to make. Completely worth it.
