Three things

July 13, 2017 by Jana 22 Comments

Steph started this idea. I’ve copied it before. And even though I planned to do a Judging Covers today, that didn’t happen so instead I bring to you another installment of Three Things.

  2. The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley
  3. (tie. I do what I want) Confessions and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Three books I’m looking forward to reading

  1. Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions (Amy Stewart)
  2. Little Fires Everywhere (Celeste Ng)
  3. Artemis (Andy Weir)

Three podcasts I enjoy

  1. True Crime Garage
  2. Homecoming
  3. Alice Isn’t Dead

Three podcasts I want to try

  1. Conversations with People Who Hate Me
  2. My Favorite Murder
  3. Mogul

Three current regular TV shows I love

  1. Better Call Saul

Three current Netflix/Hulu/Amazon shows I love

  1. Sneaky Pete
  2. The Path
  3. (tie) Stranger Things, Longmire

Three shows worth a binge

  1. The Wire
  2. The Shield
  3. Sons of Anarchy

Three places I’m excited to visit this year

  1. The Strand bookstore
  2. Dealey Plaza
  3. Steph’s beach house

Three recipes I want to try

  1. This slow cooker Mediterranean eggplant salad
  2. This pina colada chicken salad
  3. This Greek pasta salad with crab and feta although I’ll use real crab. None of that imitation shit for me

Three apps I’m loving

  1. Duolingo
  2. At Bat (how I keep up with my beloved Mets)
  3. Lose It! (a calorie tracking app)

Three things I’m glad I’ve done this year

Quick apology. I know I’m not addressing the horrifying events going on in my country (see: the Philando Castile verdict, Nabra Hassanen, Charleena Lyles #saytheirnames or Missouri SB5 or all the health care bullshit just to name a few things) because I can’t. I simply can’t. Not without setting everything around me ablaze from rage a la Firestarter. I have so many thoughts and feelings and opinions and if I start, I won’t be able to stop. So it’s not that I don’t care. I care probably too much and maybe one day I’ll be able to sort it all out into cohesive thoughts.

And now, the other stuff.

Reading. Since We Fell. Picked up The Dinner and Everything Everything from the library (finally!). Got approved for a new NetGalley book that I probably won’t get around to until 4 years after it’s pub date.

Watching. Nothing new but finishing up Bloodline and season 4 of Orphan Black and Fargo and waiting for Snowfall to start next month (that sounds weird but if you don’t know what the show is, it’s about the beginnings of crack).

Eating. Shrimp with zoodles and pesto. I genuinely have to stop myself from eating it 3 times a day.

Wanting. This tank top, if I wore tank tops. A friend from the gym found it and shared in on my FB and it’s very reflective of how much things have changed for me over the last 9 months.

Wondering. Why the hell people feel the need to gossip and spread rumors about shit they know nothing about. I get it’s for your own sick enjoyment but really, leave me and my kid out of it. Because if you’re talking about us, you must be REALLY FUCKING BORED. Also, if you want to know why she missed a practice, FUCKING ASK ME. Don’t wonder aloud to people who don’t know us or make up stories. To quote Pink, I’m not here for your entertainment. The people who need to know know and if you don’t, then clearly you’re not one of those people. So shut the fuck up.

Loving. The person I drove behind with a “Ruth is the Truth” bumper sticker. Because as well all know, she is.

That’s it for this week. Hope you guys have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Tuesday with my recommendations!

Weekly six pack, 2017, v18

June 16, 2017 by Jana 7 Comments

First full week of summer vacation is in the books! Only 4 million more to go! Although I am enjoying getting to the gym earlier and taking some classes I don’t generally get to take and also being done by 10AM most days. So that’s a perk. Also a perk? Not having to stop whatever I’m doing at 3PM to get the child from school. Parent pickup is my nightmare and 3 months without it? Yes please!

Other than that, here’s a sample of my life this week:

Reading. Bastard Out of Carolina and In the Shadow of Alabama. Picked up Everything Everything from the library. Currently contemplating creating a personal read-a-thon to clear out my Kindle.

Watching. Well, preparing to watch. Bloodline and Kimmy Schmidt. Almost done with this season of OITNB (very mixed feelings) and, to balance it all out, in need of some documentaries. Any suggestions?

Eating. It’s too fucking hot to cook so I pulled out an old recipe for gazpacho. I made it a little too spicy which mainly the result of me not wanting to cut up a chipotle pepper in adobo sauce or measure the sauce so I used the whole can (pro tip: don’t do that) so I throw some shrimp and avocado in it to offset the spice. It doesn’t help much but it does help a little.

Wearing. One of my new nail polish colors (Highlight of My Summer) I picked up on my annual birthday Ulta shopping spree. China Glaze is not a brand I use often but I’ve been quite pleased every time I’ve purchased and used their polish.

Planning. All the things I want to do this summer. It’s a long list and I don’t think my budget is happy with me but right now I give zero fucks. In September I will give lots of fucks, though, which is why I’m trying my hardest to dial things back a bit but CHOICES ARE HARD.

Laughing.

VERY low key weekend planned since I’ll be spending most of it alone with the husband off on a work trip and the child off to her annual week at my in-laws’ house. I’m looking forward to the quiet and you can bet I have a long list of things I will attempt to accomplish before they get back to make my summer that much lazier easier.

June 9, 2017 by Jana 7 Comments

Recapping this week in light of Comey’s testimony which I’m still trying to process and I don’t think I can comment on until I have my thoughts together. I don’t even know how long that’ll take because shit just got real. Like, really real.

Reading. Finished The Joy of Leaving Your Shit All Over the Place. Currently reading The Widow of Wall Street and Homesick for Another World. Picked up A Brief History of Seven Killings, Better Than Before, and The You I’ve Never Known. Hitting pause on NetGalley for awhile. Show Us Your Books on Tuesday!

Watching. House of Cards and The Path. Both insane in their own ways and both highly recommended. OITNB, I’m coming for you this weekend.

Eating. Well, drinking. Cold brew coffee made with Steph’s instructions. It took a few tries but I think I finally found the right ratio (for me) of water to coffee. This makes me happy and it makes my wallet happy since I can stop hitting DD every day.

Preparing. For another round of Whole30. Things have gotten a bit out of control around here and the weight loss has stagnated so it’s time for a reset. This is a great month for me to do it since I have no major plans except for a few days at my parents’ house. If you have a favorite recipe that’s Whole30 compliant, please share it with me. I don’t want to get bored with the same 5.

Reminding. You to join this giveaway. There’s an Amazon gift card and 100 copies of a book up for grabs!

Laughing.

Hope you all have a great weekend! We’re finishing my birthday week with a Shawshank escape room and dinner at the beach followed by a cheer fundraiser (because God forbid we go a weekend without cheerleading). See you on Tuesday for the best book day of the month!

Weekly six pack, 2017, v16

May 12, 2017 by Jana 7 Comments

Short recap coming to you live from Disney World where my daughter is competing at the D2 Summit. It’s like the Super Bowl of cheerleading but only for small gyms (large gyms were last weekend and Worlds the weekend before that. So there’s 3 Super Bowls which is weird but so is cheerleading).

Reading. Still going through Confessions and A Colony in a Nation. Picked up Exit West from the library. Nothing from NetGalley. Thanks to all who participated in Show Us Your Books. Next one is June 13.

Watching. Twin Peaks. Even though I’m old, I was only 12 or 13 when the original came out and since the revival happens soon and it’s on On Demand, I’m giving it a shot. And you know? It holds up.

Using. Dryer balls. Now, I had no clue what they were or what they did but then a very nice woman in Bed Bath and Beyond explained them to me and now I’m hooked. I might use up the dryer sheets I’ve bought unless Pinterest can give me something else to do with them but I have gone over the to the dryer ball side. Also, mine look like hedgehogs. I might buy the fish ones, too. You know. For variety.

Fuming. Over the firing of James Comey. Rather than a long rant that I’m sure others have said more eloquently than I, I’ll leave you with this:

Celebrating. Barkley 13th birthday! I can’t believe our first baby is an old, old man and I hope he sticks around forever.

Laughing. Or forced to resign or whatever gets him the fuck out of the White House.

Speaking of Mother’s Day, I want to wish all of you a happy Mother’s Day if your kids walk on two legs, four legs, three legs, if you’re a step-parent, an aunt, a grandmother, a something that can’t be labeled. I’m grateful for all the strong women in my daughter’s life because they influence her just as much as I do, and she needs their perspective and input and encouragement and guidance and mentoring. It’s what makes her well-rounded and lets her know there’s a number of people she can count on.

That said, have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here next week at some point!
