Friday favorites, volume 16

August 21, 2014 by Jana 22 Comments

I am so off my Friday posting game it’s ridiculous. I had a good thing going, posting and linking up with Amanda every Friday but then…I just stopped. I need to get back into a routine which hopefully should happen next week when my daughter goes back to school. We actually had back to school night yesterday, and while I am insanely disappointed she isn’t in class with her friends, I absolutely adore her teacher. She’s going to be a great fit for my kid and I’m excited to see how my daughter will progress in her class.

You know what I am not excited about, though? The horrible sunburn on my back. I took my daughter to the beach and, not realizing just how much time my Casper the ghost colored back would have in the sun, I neglected to put sunscreen on and now I am paying for it. It hurts so much. I couldn’t even wear a bra the other night and I have huge boobs so it’s a not a pretty sight when my girls aren’t locked up. But we have tons of after sun lotion so hopefully I won’t peel since I’ve been using that. I guess the moral of the story is this: use sunscreen even if you think you won’t need it. Because peeling skin is only fun if you can reach it.

And now, it’s Friday Favorites with Amanda.

Friday Favorites

Favorite song

The title of this song is “You Call Me a Bitch Like It’s a Bad Thing”. It’s by Halestorm. That’s all you need to know before you listen to it.
You Call Me A Bitch Like It’s A Bad Thing by Halestorm on Grooveshark

Favorite frugal find

NYX makeup. I have become totally hooked on this brand. Not only is it majorly affordable, it’s cruelty free and the choices are amazing. I bought the Adorable palette and some lip gloss, eye liner, and eye shadow primer and I could not be happier. If you’re low on funds, this is a great substitute for Urban Decay (which, by the way, has just released the Naked 2 basics palette. This is on my want list).

Favorite book/TV thing

Book Riot is my new favorite everything. It is heaven for book nerds. You all need this site in your life if you don’t have it already. I even listen to the podcast and I NEVER listen to podcasts. I am picking up one of their recommended books, How To Tell Toledo From the Night Sky by Lydia Netzer later today and I’m stoked to read it.

wpid-Photo-20140821213226.jpg

Favorite TV thing is a little harder to pick because summer TV has been crap and fall TV won’t be much better considering almost all the shows I like to watch are ending after the season they have coming up. But I am looking forward to giving that show How to Get Away With Murder a shot. It seems rather intriguing and I adore Viola Davis.

Favorite internet reads

Did high school make you hate reading? Yes? Then you’ll enjoy this post from Cracked, 4 Ways High School Makes You Hate Reading. If you have trouble sleeping then this post might help you establish a better routine. This post on why we have so much attachment to the music we listened to when we were younger (middle/high school, college) was crazy interesting. And finally, you’ve all seen the ALS ice bucket challenge videos going around. Well, there’s another challenge that’s been thrown down. Glenn and Cara O’Neill are trying to raise $2.5 million for their 4 year old daughter Eliza to receive a clinical trial treatment for Sanfillipo Syndrome. They’ve already raised over $1 million, and have the most successful Kickstarter campaign to date, but they need more. So, on the heels of the ice bucket challenge, they’ve issued the #sing2lines challenge. You can read all about it here. Oh, and Cara is/was (not really sure how that works once you graduate. Which is sad considering how long ago I graduated) a sorority sister of mine, so there’s that, too.

Favorite quote

This is what I tell myself on the bad days. It seems glib but it works.

Friday favorites: volume 15?

August 1, 2014 by Jana 11 Comments

How the hell is it August? Wasn’t it just June like yesterday? No? Well, that’s okay because August means school starts soon and while I love my daughter, if she doesn’t get out of my house, I’m going to lose my mind. And is it wrong that I’m already planning what I’m going to do the first day she’s back at school? (Pedicure and nap, if you were wondering.)

That said, it’s time for another round of Friday favorites except I don’t know exactly what edition this is because I have become an blogging slacker as of late (and I apologize to my blogger friends for the lack of commenting I’ve been doing. I can’t get my shit together long enough to write a comment). So I’m picking edition 15 because it seems like a good choice and maybe an approximate value. Math has never been my strength.

Favorite song

Rise Against, Audience of One. There are not enough words for how much I love this song. I feel music the way some people feel paintings or poetry and this song brings out all the emotions for me. It’s not a life changing song but it definitely changes my mood each time I listen (also, I love that it’s one of those songs that about one thing but it can be interpreted to mean so much more)

Favorite frugal find

I am in the midst of a makeup bag overhaul and when I was cleaning out old lipgloss, eye shadow, and the like, I realized I had 6 MAC items that desperately needed to go. Enter MAC’s Back To MAC recycling program where if you return 6 (or more) eligible items, you get to pick out a free item (lipstick/gloss, eye shadow, or something else I’m not remembering). I purchased new lipgloss recently but I definitely needed an eye shadow refresher. And I got one. For free.photo (26)

Favorite book/TV thing

Rick Springfield, “Jessie’s Girl” singer extraordinaire, wrote a memoir. So of course I have to read it. And I picked it up from the library yesterday. Along with some others:

I have no favorite TV thing this week because quite frankly, I’m pissed with TV. More specifically, I’m annoyed with On Demand And Netflix. Because none of them are showing any of the episodes of any show I need to catch up on. Complete first world problem but that’s okay because Ebola is no joke and I’ll take no new episodes of The Following on On Demand any day.

Favorite internet reads

So many good finds on the internet this week (and weeks past. Big ups to Pocket for being a great place to store these posts so I can use them). Like this post on Mashable about 90s song that are darker than you think. Some I knew, some I didn’t. Or this post on how to quickly travel through all 50 states (if I had a bucket list, this would be on it). Or if you need to waste kill some time, take this quiz, Which 80s Cartoon Are You? (I got Muppet Babies, which, given my Muppets obsession, is perfect). You can also check out this post I wrote on Monday detailing promises I made to my friends without kids.

Favorite quote

Favorite funnies

I shed a golden retriever every day

Bryan is genius.
This made me laugh so hard
It’s better that we get along
It’s all about the tactic

Have a great weekend y’all! If you need me, I’ll be on my couch, binge watching the final 6 episodes of The Killing.

Friday favorites, volume 13

July 18, 2014 by Jana 10 Comments

I don’t know about you guys, but this summer is wreaking havoc on ability to get shit done. Ordinarily, I’m pretty productive, staying on top of everything I need to do and accomplish but as of late, I do nothing of value. Let’s rephrase–I do nothing. It’s not like I don’t try but I get about halfway finished and then say fuck it and go about my day, reading the internets or a book or playing RummiKub on my iPad or binge watch White Collar. I keep telling myself that school starts in a few more weeks and everything will get back to normal.

It’s good to have dreams.

As for my Friday favorites, it’s the one streak I’ve kept alive this summer so let’s dive into that so I don’t feel like a complete failure.

Favorite song

When you’re home all day with a 7 year, what you listen to pretty much goes down the crapper and I treasure the few moments each day when we actually agree on a song. Like this one.

Favorite frugal find

When we went to pick up our painted ceramic figures from a paint your own pottery place in our town, we found out that they have tye-dye. I was not spending $15 for one shirt (especially knowing she was going to want to do more than one) so I went to the craft store, found 2 shirts and a kit, and I had a 25% off coupon. That means we got two projects for roughly $10 instead of $30. I don’t even mind the fact that I have blue hands now.

On other note, the craft store had Halloween projects on display. HALLOWEEN. For shame, Michael’s. For shame.

Favorite internet thing

Steph mentioned it yesterday but it’s worth repeating because my inner grammar nerd freaked out with glee when I saw the Weird Al Word Crimes video. I’m sure you’ve seen it but if not, here it is:

Also on my list of internet things I loved are this BuzzFeed post on sister tattoos (one of my sisters is on board. We need to work on the other) and this Huffington Post post (because flying with a kid is hard enough without people hating you simply because you need to bring your child with you. Trust when I say, most of us are trying our hardest to control them. Those who don’t, well, they deserve the hate).

Favorite book/TV thing

This one’s a combo.

As if Gone Girl and Dark Places being released as movies this year isn’t enough for me as a Gillian Flynn fan, I read that Sharp Objects is going to be a TV show!!! I don’t invest in many new shows (because inevitably the ones I like get canceled) but I will be giving time to this one. Because Gillian Flynn.

Friday favorites: Special edition

July 11, 2014 by Jana 27 Comments

We have a special guest poster for this week’s edition of Friday favorites. She’s not a blogger, she’s super cute, painfully smart, and she’s my 7 year old daughter, Erica.

Erica makes rare appearances on the blog both in name and picture but we talked about it and she’s completely fine with me sharing that information for this post. So before we go on to the Q&A portion of today’s favorites (because getting her to sit still long enough to write the post herself was an exercise in just how much patience I don’t have), here’s a picture:

She’s obviously the yellow M&M.

In an effort to keep this on track and not go completely awry, I had her make a list of her 10 favorite things and then asked her to tell me why she likes them. She loved being interviewed and if she ever becomes famous, the talk show circuit will not be a problem for her. So that’s good. I suppose.

Anyway.

Let’s take it away with Erica’s Friday favorites:

1. Spotify. Erica says: It has songs I like and I like listening to music. Jana says: this is proof she is my child.

2. Toys. Erica says: I can be creative and make my own games and fashions with my Barbies. Jana says: take out the fashion part, and this is further proof she is my child.

3. TV. Erica says: My favorite shows are Sam & Cat, the Haunted Hathaways, Every Witch Way, The Thundermans, and My Little Pony. Hey, Mommy, why didn’t you write down Spongebob? Jana says: Because Spongebob is horrible. We’ve covered this before. Also, Nickelodeon is always on in my house. I think my TV is even sick of Sam and Cat.

4. Gummies. Erica says: My favorite gummies are fruit snacks and Gummi Bears. Jana says: I don’t know how the hell she is my child. Gummy snacks are the worst. But this picture of cannibears is hilarious.

5. School. Erica says: I like school because I can learn and be smart. Math and writing are my favorite subjects. Jana says: I’m fairly certain this is my one allotted parenting victory of the year.

6. Ocean City, MD. Erica says: It’s my favorite place because it has the beach and the boardwalk and good French fries. Jana says: this is my proudest moment ever.

7. Our dogs and cat. Erica says: I like to play with Dobie and chase Barkley with the football. Jana says: it’s more like she enjoys annoying the shit out of Dobie until he walks away and playing keep away with Barkley’s football. He, too, gets pissed.

8. Cooking. Erica says: My favorite thing to cook is oatmeal raisin cookies. Jana says: this about sums it up:

9. Rarity. Erica says: She’s my favorite My Little Pony because she has purple hair and is fancy. Jana says: Rarity is actually kind of an asshole. Pinkie pie, however, is hilarious.

10. Woofie. Erica says: He’s my favorite stuffie because he’s cuddly. Jana says: He’s her favorite stuffie because I forced it on her when she was a baby since he was one of the biggest yet portable and durable stuffed animals we had. But they’re really cute together.

That’s all she said. I hope you enjoyed getting to know my little girl (though I am surprised she left out cheerleading and ice cream and Frozen). She (and I) want you to have a great weekend!

Friday favorites, volume 10

July 4, 2014 by Jana 4 Comments

Alright. Friday favorites. Let’s get to it so I’m not taking up too much of your Fourth of July time (unless you’re in another country, (Krystal), then by all means, take your time).

Linking up with Amanda, as always.

Friday Favorites

Favorite song

I really struggled with picking a song this week. Not because I don’t like any but it’s because I like too many. Which I guess is not a horrible problem to have. Ordinarily I pick a rock song but this week’s pick, Hozier’s Take Me to Church, is pretty dark and not quite rock. It has an Elton John vibe to it, and it’s seriously cool to listen to. Unfortunately, it has a really disturbing video so I’m just sharing the song.

Favorite frugal find

This has been a shit week for me financially. EZ Pass decided it was going to change how much we have automatically deducted, due to an off month of lots of travel; Amazon charged me for an item I returned AFTER I returned it; and something else crappy happened but I can’t remember so clearly it was too awful. However, I did happen to remember that we had a gift card for gas, given to us by my in-laws, so I used that to buy gas this week. Not having to pay for gas at $3.69/gallon? Yes, please.

Favorite Internet thing

So many good Internet reads this week.
For instance, you can check out the list of 55 movies your kid needs to see before they turn 13 (even if you don’t have kids, it’s a great list). Or you can read this list of 50 greatest things done by Americans. Or maybe check out 42 money saving tips for makeup addicts.

Favorite book/TV thing

I have been binge watching White Collar (if you’re not, I totally recommend. It’s a basic, formulaic cop show but it’s fun and has a bit of different twist, with one of the main characters being an ex-con now working for the FBI so they use his con man skills and that’s cool) and I forgot who mentioned Drop Dead Diva but I did find that one on Netflix and since it was a show I had always planned to watch but forgot was on, I’m stoked to watch it next.

As far as books, I didn’t really find any good books this week. What I’m currently reading, Things We Set on Fire, is a great book and if you’re looking for something to read, I suggest it. I did find lots of fun posts about reading and I’ve been sharing them on FB so why don’t you go ahead and join us over there so you can see for yourself?

Favorite quote

I’ve decided to start sharing my favorite quote along with everything else. This is the one for this week:

And just in case you can’t get to see fireworks, here you go. Just image they’re bigger. And louder.

fireworksHappy 4th of July! Enjoy your weekend!
