This week in…: The twelfth in 2016

March 25, 2016 by Jana 19 Comments

this week

  • Finished The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend. Started Evicted (NetGalley) and will be bringing that and American Housewife with me on vacation next week. Put The Nest on hold. I don’t ordinarily put new, megahyped releases on hold immediately but something about this book is making me need to read it NOW. Don’t forget, next Show Us Your Books is April 12th. It will be here very soon.
  • iTunes approved The Armchair Librarians!! As of this writing, we’re still not in the directory but we will be soon! listen
  • Found a dead cat on the road behind my house. It looked identical to my cat but thankfully, it was not. We learned this after my husband inspected the dead cat’s face (and after I picked it up off the road, thinking it was my cat and she needed a proper burial). This is why I HATE having an indoor/outdoor cat. We also gave the not our cat a name and burial (Mrs. Louie Meowzer, RIP. Also, the child named her).
  • My daughter’s cheer squad is going to US Finals! Talk about an emotional decision. Long story short, they should have won but made a huge mistake in their routine and it cost them first place and a paid bid but we’re going anyway. Virginia Beach, we’re coming for you! My poor wallet is screaming, though. Can you hear it?
  • Made taco stuffed peppers. Super easy. Cook turkey or ground beef and season with your favorite taco seasoning like you would if you were making regular tacos (I use a homemade one that I’d link to except I can’t remember my Pinterest password to get it from my laptop). Cut 4 peppers (any color but we used green) in half and spoon the taco filling into pepper halves. Sprinkle (or use heaping handfuls. Your choice) your favorite cheese and bake at 350 for roughly 20 minutes. Top with salsa, guacamole, sour cream or whatever else you feel like using because you’re an adult and can top your food with whatever you want. Stuff it in your eating hole.
  • Am currently 3 episodes behind in Better Call Saul and 4 in Generation X. I blame House of Cards.
  • BOUGHT CARNIVAL OF MADNESS TICKETS!!!
  • Got my speaker badge for FinCon16 that WP won’t let me upload for “security reasons”. WTF, WordPress? But I do have all kinds of feelings about being a speaker for realz and not just running a mentoring session. Public speaker I am not.
  • Internet reads: A whole bunch of things people wish their friends knew about depression (from Buzzfeed). This real life version of The Leisure Seeker (and you should totally follow her on Facebook. It’s amazing to watch and she is my idol). This perspective on child support from a man who loves his children but is hugely delinquent in his payments.
  • Funnies: IMG_1875 IMG_1873 IMG_1871

That’s all for me this week. I’m headed to Boston on Monday so if you don’t see me around next week, you’ll know why. I still have some posts coming at you, including a new episode of The Armchair Librarians on Thursday (tacked to the bottom of a post, per usual). I don’t know how many pictures I’ll be sharing but you can follow along on Instagram if you want. See you when I get back! And happy Easter!

This week in…: The 11th one in 2016

March 18, 2016 by Jana 16 Comments

Daylight savings time fuck anyone else up this week? Time changes normally don’t affect me too much but this year, it’s kicked my ass. Brutally. So much so that I literally have no idea what happened. I will do my best to remember and recap:

  • Started The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend. It’s a cute little book thus far that of course mentions meth. I truly can’t escape it. Picked up nothing new because I have made a commitment to my ebooks that I will read them. DNF Skippy Dies. Sorry, Skippy.
  • Binged on Bosch. So good. Watch it if you can.
  • Continued to weep for this country as Trump’s winning streak remains intact and the Duggars returned to TV. Also, now that there’s a SCOTUS nomination, that should make for a nice side show that is the circus of this election.
  • Made chicken noodle soup in the crockpot. Put the noodles in too early. They dissolved. But it made for a nice creamy texture without any milk or cream. That was a fun discovery.
  • Found out rage yoga is a real thing.  I NEED IT IN MY LIFE.
  • Bought this:
When this is the name of a lipstick, you fucking buy it

  • Internet reads: from two of my blogger friends, Happiness Is and I Like Other Women. And this letter to troubled girls. Most of us can benefit from its words.
  •  Funnies:

  • I am a Gemini. This is completely accurate.

Have a great weekend! We’ll be back together on Tuesday with Judging Covers!!

Three (and a half) on Thursday

March 17, 2016 by Jana 7 Comments

Today’s post idea, title included, is completely ripped off from Stephanie at Not Entirely Perfect (a blog you should be reading if you’re already not) because I feel the need to write but am short on time.

Bandsintown. This is an app/Facebook linked site in the vein of Goodreads except it’s, as you can probably guess, for bands and concerts. You sign up and get alerts, you can RSVP to let your social media friends and followers know you’re interested or going to an event, and also see photos, tour trailers, and more inside scoop stuff. It’s a pretty fun app that I’m currently learning more about but it is helping me stalk tickets for the Carnival of Madness so there’s that.

All the Books. Probably my favorite podcast of all the podcasts. It’s a weekly one produced by Book Riot that’s devoted to new releases. Liberty and Rebecca are wonderful, knowledgeable, and personable hosts who love books and reading and authors as much as I do (maybe more, if that’s possible). Fellow booknerds and podcast fans, definitely check this one out. Also, it’s totally giving me an idea for a website for The Armchair Librarians.

Starbucks iced green tea. I prefer iced drinks to hot ones and now that the weather is warming up, I cannot stop drinking this. I have the K-cups at home because I would probably go broke drinking them from Starbucks every day (even with the $.50 refills). And, fortunately for me, I do not like sweetened tea (it’s disgusting and when I was down south and asked for unsweetened tea, everyone looked at me like they didn’t know what to do with me. #truestory), so not only is this tea delicious and slightly minty, it’s also calorie free!

And this.

The half part is this week’s episode of The Armchair Librarians. This week, Steph and I talk, in depth, about Tampa by Alissa Nutting. I’m still having technical difficulties getting the episodes into iTunes so until those are resolved and I’ve done a website for the show itself, I’ll link them here.

This week in…: the 10th of 2016

March 11, 2016 by Jana 14 Comments

Once again, coming to you live from my iPhone. So this will be short, sweet, and probably full of typos and weird autocorrects.

  • Still reading Beasts and Children. Picked up The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend and American Housewife.
  • Thanks to everyone who linked up for Show Us Your Books and listened to the podcast. It should be in iTunes next week and we’ll be sure to let you know when it is.
  • Had a fun and interesting Twitter conversation with Richard Fifield (The Flood Girls). THIS is why I love authors and social media. It’s amazing when you can talk about a book with the person who wrote it. It’s even better when the author is kind and funny and personable. And yes, I fangirled hard the whole time (oh, and his IG handle–because I stalk on all the social media–is mrsjakeryan. HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!)
  • Watched half of the new season of House of Cards. Insane. Just insane.
  • Hit my steps goal on half the days. Okay, so I lowered it to 5k but still.
  • This school year, my daughter has been a buddy for the Special Olympics and this past week was their bowling tournament. I have never been so proud to watch her do anything ever.
  • Did you guys know that there are mint brownie Larabars? They are amazing!!
  • Internet reads: Again, I read some stuff but it’s mostly election and social policy stuff. Boring to most people except dorky me. But this post (and Ali’s, which are hilarious, by the way) is an example of why I am so glad not to have to date in the era of dating apps. And also this one about Steven Avery and some evidence that suggests he might have been framed (what, you think I’ve forgotten my obsession? Also, it’s a post from Hello Giggles so the reporting isn’t the greatest but it gets the point across).
  • Funnies:

Another weekend, another cheer competition. This one is late in the day, though, which is nice. And a nice change from having to get up with the fucking roosters.

Hope you all have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here on Tuesday!

This week in…: The ninth one in 2016

March 4, 2016 by Jana 23 Comments

this week

  • Still reading Glass by Ellen Hopkins (it’s a long book). Finished Sweetgirl. Picked up nothing new. Full reviews on everything coming your way on Tuesday, March 8 for Show Us Your Books with me and Steph. Hopefully iTunes will approve The Armchair Librarians by then. If not, we’ll have the audio for you available somewhere as a sneak preview.new_logo_edit
  • Speaking of podcasts, the creator of Welcome to Night Vale has a new podcast releasing on Tuesday. It’s called Alice Isn’t Dead. I am so excited for it!!
  • Had the Mondayist of Mondays. I sent my kid to school with a half-wet shirt, got her to school late because Monday, threw a chair at my fence to startle my dog away from a dismembered rabbit carcass after I had to yell at the other dog to spit out what he was consuming, and my cat ran away from home. This was all before noon.
  • Found out that next Friday, Bosch season 2 will be on Amazon. Kathy turned me on to the show and I’ve been eagerly awaiting this release.
  • My friend’s daughter followed me on Instagram. I corrected the grammar in her profile. I couldn’t stop myself.
  • I go to this conference every year, FinCon, and run a live mentoring session. This year, I decided that, in addition to the mentoring, I would submit a proposal for a panel. Found out earlier this week that the panel was accepted! I am terrified at the thought of all the public speaking but I’m trying to push myself outside my comfort zone. This should do it.
  • Saw Deadpool. You guys. This movie was fucking awesome. And that is coming directly from someone who, as a general rule and preference, hates comic book movies. When the movie’s opening credits have Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” playing over them, you know you’re in for something pretty damn special. However, please do not take small children (like anyone under 10) to see it. It’s really, REALLY inappropriate. There were times I thought I shouldn’t be watching it. And I’m knocking on 40’s door.
  • Internet reads are absent this week because a) I didn’t really read much of interest (fell down a Gawker rabbit hole, though) and b) forgot to save the links to share.
  • Funnies:

Have a great weekend! See you back on Tuesday for Show Us Your Books!!

P.S. Would guys mind helping promote my pitch contest? It’d be much appreciated! Here’s the link: https://janalynchbooks.wordpress.com/2016/02/23/pitch-me-with-your-best-shot/
