Interview with a bookworm: Kristin from Kristin’s Knook

July 13, 2015 by Jana 15 Comments

interview with a bookwormHappy Monday! What better way to start a week than with a bookworm interview. I know we usually do these on Tuesdays but tomorrow is Show Us Your Books! This week we’re chatting with Kristin from Kristin’s Knook. You should visit her when you’re done reading her interview and say hi. You should also read all the past interviews in case you’re new to the series or you want to catch up with old favorites.

CgbGi9SHi, I’m Kristin and my blog is Kristin’s kNook. I write about our army life, my experiences as a teacher, our remodeling project, and our dogs.  There’s recipes and book-talk too.  A little bit of everything.

Jana: Why do you enjoy reading?
Kristin: As a pre-teen, I spent every spare cent I had on books.  I would go to Waldenbooks every weekend, if I could swing it, and buy a new book. I would be done with it by the end of the weekend and have to scrounge up $5 more to buy another book the next weekend.  On a good week, I could come up with $10 and buy two.  I think, especially as a kid, I liked reading because it took me somewhere else.  Your travel and experience options are limited as a child.  Reading is necessary.
Now I read to keep accumulating these experiences.  How could you not want to be transported somewhere else by a book?

Jana: How do you decide what to read?
Kristin: I look for recommendations from bloggers and friends.  Also, I browse Audible a lot to see what is recommended for me.  Sometimes I’ll get those books in audio form or I’ll look at the library.  Goodreads helps me keep track. I will honestly read a little bit of everything.  I’m picky, but not picky about genre.

Jana: Who are some of your favorite authors and/or genres?
Kristin: I like fiction and non-fiction.  Autobiographies are good.  Historical fiction is probably my favorite, but I don’t have a favorite historical fiction author. I’m not a fan of anything that could be turned into a romantic comedy.  I do like Rainbow Rowell, Gretchen Rubin, Rebecca Stead, Liane Moriarity, Bill O’Reilly, Shauna Niequist, and Charlaine Harris (with the exception of the awful-last-two-Sookie-books) just to name a few.  I told you, I’ll read just about anything.

distracted by books

Jana: What’s your favorite book or a book you always recommend?
Kristin: At the moment, I’d recommend The Girl on the Train if you are interested in fiction or maybe something by Rainbow Rowell.  I always recommend The Wilder Life to Little House fans and I think Gretchen Rubin’s books on happiness and habits can apply to anyone. For kids, I usually recommend Doreen Cronin, Jennifer L. Holm, and Rebecca Stead.  Jana’s note: YES to Rainbow Rowell, especially Eleanor and Park and Attachments. Read those.

Jana: Do you watch movie adaptations of books? What do you think of them?
Kristin: It depends how much I liked the book.  Oftentimes, I’ll just see the movie if I have no interest in reading the book.  For example, I don’t like the book Pride and Prejudice, but I love the Colin Firth movie adaptation. The Hunger Games books were fantastic and the movies did them about as much justice as possible.  I couldn’t stand the book Divergent, but I really liked the movie.  I take this on a case-by-case basis.

book and movie
Jana:Ebooks, paper books, audiobooks, or a combination? Why?
Kristin: Audiobooks or paper books.  I think I’ve only read two books on my Kindle app. Since I have a long-ish commute to work, the only surefire way I know I’ll read is if I’m listening to a book.  It’s foolproof.  Unless I don’t like the book.  Then it’s a long painful drive.  But I don’t think I’ve ever not (eventually) finished an audiobook.  I remember hating All the Light We Cannot See, yet I kept going with it because I didn’t want to listen to the radio.  Paper books are easier to put down if I don’t like them. Also, I’m one of those over-organized people who will spend more time on the process of doing something than the actual task of completing it. For example,  I’ll look at my stack of books and maybe even carry one around with me, but rarely start reading.  Especially if I’m busy with other things.

Jana: Do you use the library or buy books?
Kristin: I prefer using a library just because it’s free, but I buy a lot of audiobooks from Audible.  It’s just a matter of cost vs. convenience.  It’s worth it to me.  I pay about $10-12 a book when all is said and done.  I can live with that.  I only buy actual paper books if I know I’m going to love it.  Case in point: Pioneer Girl, the giant coffee table book of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s original manuscript.  I pre-ordered months in advance.

Jana: Does it offend you when people call you a bookworm or book nerd? Why or why not?
Kristin: I don’t think I’ve been called these names.  If I have, it was in high school when everyone else was busy not getting an education, and I was making my way through whatever I could find in the meager holdings of the small library. I’m so glad we encourage reading in schools today.  Back then, we didn’t past 5th or 6th grade. These days, when I force my students to read, I sit and read with them.  I manage to get through a lot of books this way too.

reading time

Jana: How do you find time to read?
Kristin: Listening to audiobooks is a Godsend.  It magically creates purpose out of otherwise wasted time.  That’s my biggest secret, but I know many people don’t care for audiobooks. I usually can form a habit by forcing myself to do something, so that would be my advice to someone looking to make time to read.  I originally set a timer for 20 minutes every night and I read before bed.  Soon enough, it was an intentional habit and I didn’t have to bother with the timer.  I think if you want to make time to read, you will make time to read.  We all have our choices and priorities (sorry, I really sound like a teacher there).  Also, accountability helps.  I share the books I read on my blog once a month and that keeps me reading.

Jana: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to people who say they don’t enjoy reading or don’t have time to read?
Kristin: See above.  Set a goal, keep a list, take on a reading challenge of some sort to jump-start things, etc.

Interview with a bookworm: Kelli from Kellibeans

July 7, 2015 by Jana 15 Comments

It’s Tuesday so you know what that means! Interview with a bookworm day!

Today’s bookworm is Kelli from Kellibeans and I need to say that I’ve been reading her blog for two years and just now, literally just now, I figured out that her blog name is a play on jelly beans because clearly I am an idiot (or maybe it’s a play on something else and I’m too dumb to figure that out, too).interview with a bookworm

A bit of interview housekeeping: there’s four interviews left in the series and if you want to be interviewed, please let me know so we can keep it going. If it ends after the last one, I have a new books feature I’m planning which gives you something to look forward to. And, as always, don’t forget to read the interview archives when you’re done.

Now let’s talk to Kelli.

Kelli

Come see me over at Kellibeans, we talk mostly about the beach, books, and pretty pictures!
Jana: Why do you enjoy reading?
Kelli: It allows me to travel to places I would never be able to go otherwise and it allows me to experience life through someone else’s mind.
book variations
Jana: How do you decide what to read?
Kelli: I read a lot of book lists on sites like Bustle and Bookriot I also stalk my Goodreads friends constantly.
Jana: Who are some of your favorite authors and/or genres?
Kelli: All of them, I will read anything if the story is captivating. I’m no book snob, every book is fair game in my world.
Jana: What’s your favorite book or a book you always recommend?
Kelli: I try to recommend books to friends based on what I think they will like that I have read. My favorite genre’s are probably literary fiction and chick lit, also any book with a picture of a beach on the front deserves a go.
Jana: Do you watch movie adaptations of books? What do you think of them?
Kelli: Rarely, I’m not a movie/TV person in general but movies based on book usually just make me mad.
Jana: Ebooks, paper books, audiobooks, or a combination? Why?
Kelli: Paper forever and always! There is nothing like the feel and smell of paper. Yes I smell my books, you don’t?
smell a book
Jana: Do you use the library or buy books?
Kelli: Both, I use the library for new books and I stalk used books stores and half.com for older books I’m interested in reading.
Jana: Does it offend you when people call you a bookworm or book nerd? Why or why not? Kelli: Not at all, nothing much offends me.
Jana: How do you find time to read?
Kelli: I work from home so no boss is looking over my shoulder, there is always a book on my desk for office down time. I also read in the evenings instead of watching TV.

Jana: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to people who say they don’t enjoy reading or don’t have time to read?
Kelli: If you don’t enjoy reading you just haven’t found the right book, if you don’t have time make it. Even if you only read for 10 or 15 minutes a day just read something, it’s exercise for your mind!

Literary Ladies summer reading challenge: My list

June 29, 2015 by Jana 15 Comments

LITERARY LADIES

I hadn’t planned on sharing my reading list for The Literary Ladies summer reading challenge but then I remembered that I do better when I make my goals public (because you know, accountability and the looming threat of public shame if I fail) so I changed my mind. If you haven’t heard of the Literary Ladies, it’s a reading challenge/book club (book for that is Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen if you’re interested in joining) hosted by Kristen, Kay, and Kari. There’s also a Goodreads group if that’s your jam or you want an enhanced experience or can’t wait for the linkups. The reading challenge runs from June 21-Sept 21 and the first book club discussion is August 4 (I think. Please correct me if I’m mistaken).

They picked 10 categories for the challenge so I’ve listed those below along with my picks. Let me know if you’ve read any of these so I can reconsider or if I should be even more excited to read one of them.

YA Book: Hate List by Jennifer Brown or Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin

Book by a non-US Author: The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty

Book recommended by a blogger: Dirty Rush by Taylor Bell (recommended by Steph and, to be clear, I’m pretty confident I’m going to hate-read this one)

Book on my TBR list for more than a year: Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler (added to my list on 7/23/14. Close enough)

Book with a kickass female lead: Let It Be by Chad Gayle

Book that is or will be a movie or TV show: The Long Home by William Gay (you can see here for the casting for this one)

Book by a comedian/celebrity: Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari and Eric Klinenberg

Book with a one word title: Confess by Colleen Hoover or Us by David Nicholls

Suspenseful/mystery/thriller book: Radiant Angel by Nelson DeMille

Book about summer/with summer in the title: Summerlong by Dean Bakopolous

If one reading challenge isn’t enough for you, Alyssa and I will be announcing our Long Hard Reading Challenge in August, Lisa and Shelly run their monthly Page Turners book club, and Erin is also running one. If I missed one, let me know in the comments.

Happy reading!

Interview with a bookworm: Nadine from Life by Nadine Lynn

June 23, 2015 by Jana 22 Comments

Today I’m thrilled to have Nadine from Life by Nadine Lynn as the featured bookworm! Make sure to check out the rest of the interviews by visiting the archives.interview with a bookworm
Nadine

Hello there! I am Nadine and I blog over at Life by Nadine Lynn. Over in my corner of the internet, you will find a collection of my daily muses, my constant battle with myself of wanting to eat all the delicious things and working out to enjoy such indulgences, adorable pictures of my dogs, a little snark and probably glitter. A Yankee who has let the southern world take over her life. I am married to a man that shares my sense of humor, my love for binging TV shows like a bad drug, my love for college football, and battling it out over a good game of Mario Kart.

Jana: Why do you enjoy reading?
Nadine: I enjoy reading because I love the escape that it gives from real life. I get caught up in the lives of the characters of each book as if these are my friends…or me. I love the imagination it takes to paint the picture of each scene.

Jana: How do you decide what to read?
Nadine: Sometimes I am shallow and pick up a book because of the cover. Don’t we all do that? Ultimately though, my decision is based on the description of what the book is going to be about. If it sounds interesting to me, I throw it in my to-read pile. More recently, a lot of my to-read books have come from Steph and Jana’s book link up! I keep up with them all on Goodreads. Want to be friends?
Jana: Who are some of your favorite authors and/or genres?
Nadine: My favorite authors are Janet Evanovich, Nicholas Sparks and JK Rowling. I don’t really have a specific genre that I stick to, I like to branch out. Most recently, I have gotten in to some nonfiction books. Something I wouldn’t have really read before. I am just not a fan of things that scare me, so I stay away from horror. Other than that, anything is game.
Jana: What’s your favorite book or a book you always recommend?
Nadine: This is a loaded question. Some of my favorite books are Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom, the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks, Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts and Yes Please! by Amy Pohler.
Jana: Do you watch movie adaptations of books? What do you think of them?
Nadine: Sometimes. I will not watch a movie until I read a book. The thing I love so much about books is the picture that is painted in my head. Many times it is very different than the movie. There are very few movies that I like better than the book. The Notebook is the only one that comes to mind.patterson reading quote
Jana: Ebooks, paper books, audiobooks, or a combination? Why?
Nadine: I like them all. There is something special about walking in to a bookstore to pick a book out that will never fade for me. I could spend hours in a book store! I don’t like holding on to a ton of books though, I am not a fan of clutter. So more often than not, I get books through the Kindle app on my iPad. I love having lots of books at my finger tips. I just started listening to audiobooks. Yes Please! was my first one and listening to Amy read her own book was awesome. I have a feeling I will consume most nonfiction books this way!
Jana: Do you use the library or buy books?
Nadine: I buy books. I live in a small town and the library is far away, in a direction that I never go. I probably could get a library card for downtown near my office, but I don’t know when I would get the chance to go. Excuses.
Jana: Does it offend you when people call you a bookworm or book nerd? Why or why not?
Nadine: No! I feel sorry for people who don’t know the joy of getting lost in a book. Reading is a wonderful hobby to have, and it keeps your mind sharp. It is much like watching TV or a movie. You get a glimpse in to another world and it is fascinating.
Jana: How do you find time to read?

Nadine: Reading is like working out or watching TV. If you enjoy it, you will find time for it. I do the majority of my reading on my lunch break. I will also pick up my book if my husband falls asleep on the couch when we are watching TV or sometimes I just curl up in a chair on the weekends just to relax with a book.
Jana: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to people who say they don’t enjoy reading or don’t have time to read?
Nadine: Try many different types of books. You may find that there is a certain genre that interests you. Or perhaps, start with an audiobook while in the car. You don’t have anything better to do while driving anyways! Reading may not be for everyone, but I don’t know how it couldn’t be??? Have you ever walked through a bookstore with no where to be and just take in the smells and the incredible feeling of all this knowledge and story telling right at your finger tips?FullSizeRender (7)

Interview with a bookworm: Alyssa from Alyssa Goes Bang

June 8, 2015 by Jana 16 Comments

Since tomorrow is Show Us Your Books, I decided we’d start the week with everyone’s favorite interview series. I’m thrilled that today’s interview is with Alyssa from Alyssa Goes Bang. If you’re not reading her blog, you are seriously missing out and you need to visit her as soon as you’re done reading her interview. She’s also the co-founder (with me) of the Long Hard Reading Challenge (details coming this summer but it is exactly what you think it is).

interview with a bookworm

Hey Jana Says readers! I’m Alyssa, and I babble over at alyssagoesbang. I don’t really talk about anything in particular, but there’s a good chance you’ll find some posts about the things I muse over, running, yoga, New Jersey, and being an Alyssa. Many thanks to Jana for having me here to babble some more about books!

Jana: Why do you enjoy reading?

Alyssa: I love stories. And I love exploring how people choose to tell stories. I have a hard time getting swept up in movies—I always think, “What a well-written scene!” or “That actor is doing a great job.”—but for some reason, I can travel through time and space when I’m reading a good book. I love language and seeing how other writers use it to deliver their meaning. I love a well-crafted sentence, a well-built world. Everything about the labor that goes into writing a book appeals to me on every level and it’s just something I want to always be a part of. Books and characters and authors have always been there to help me feel less alone in the world, and almost everything I’ve ever needed to know about life I’ve learned in a book.book to read

Jana: How do you decide what to read?

Alyssa: I base my picks off recommendations from friends, or if I really like something by an author I’ll try to read the rest of their works and then move onto books by their contemporaries, or influences, or authors influenced by them. I usually alternate between heavy and light, unless I’m really on a particular kick.

Jana: Who are some of your favorite authors and/or genres?

Alyssa: I love literary fiction first and foremost—just a good, hearty, well-told story about people. Second to that is probably satire and dark humor. My favorite authors include Kurt Vonnegut, Bret Easton Ellis, Judy Blume and Jodi Picoult so… sure, you could say I’m a bit eclectic. I love poets, from Bukowski to Lorde to Shakespeare (the latter, I have a tattoo for.) and essayists (David Sedaris) and short stories (John Updike, Raymond Carver) too. I also have undying adoration for the Beats (Kerouac, Ginsberg, etc.) and the “Lost Generation” of post-WWI authors, with The Great Gatsby being my favorite book ever. Sorry, did you want me to narrow it down? Oops…

Jana: What’s your favorite book or a book you always recommend?

Alyssa: The Great Gatsby is my all-time favorite, but I also always recommend Jodi Picoult’s books to everyone, Megan McCafferty’s Jessica Darling series to every girl and woman I know, and Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five and Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke to basically everyone. I like to talk to people and get a sense of what they like before I recommend books though (tell me the last book you loved!), because I know not everything is for everyone. But here’s a quick list of titles I think most people would enjoy.

Jana: Do you watch movie adaptations of books? What do you think of them?

Alyssa: Honestly, not if I can help it. I’m not a huge movie buff to begin with, though it has happened often that I’ve seen a movie that I didn’t realize was first a book. But in many cases—The Hunger Games and Harry Potter series being the only exceptions currently coming to mind—there’s little point in me watching a movie of a book I loved. Almost always a disappointment, just because I want all the richness of the book to be in every iteration of the story, and that’s just not possible in movies.book to movie

Jana: Ebooks, paper books, audiobooks, or a combination? Why?

Alyssa: I have actually never yet listened to an audiobook! I prefer paper books, but eBooks are generally less expensive and living in a studio, I need to go for the space-saving route these days.

Jana: Do you use the library or buy books?

Alyssa: I do use the library a lot, but I’m a re-reader so I’ll buy the book if I know I’m going to want to come back to it or leave marks of my own on it.

Jana: Does it offend you when people call you a bookworm or book nerd? Why or why not?

Alyssa: Not at all! I don’t find those to be offensive terms. I love to read—and you can call me whatever you want, it makes no difference to me. 🙂

Jana: How do you find time to read?

Alyssa: I make time—the same way I make time to run, to do yoga, to clean my home. No one magically just *has* time. I make sure I read daily by making it a part of my going-to-bed routine (it helps that I’m an insomniac and reading is one of the only things that helps me fall asleep some nights) and carrying a book with me everywhere…lunch breaks, doctor’s office waiting rooms, etc.
good book

Jana: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to people who say they don’t enjoy reading or don’t have time to read?

Alyssa: The almost-English-teacher in me wants to believe that it’s just a matter of connecting to the material. You may detest the Classics but embrace graphic novels, or abhor fantasy and adore YA. I think reading opens so many doors for a person—an exquisite imagination, passive education, unexpected intelligence, a sense of critical thought and examination—and I really do believe there’s something out there for everyone to enjoy and benefit from. But people won’t make that connection unless they’re willing to make it a point to, and a lot of people just won’t. So I won’t force you…but I’ll probably recommend you a title or two every once in a while :)
