I have always appreciated the gift of the First Amendment. The fact that we have the right to say whatever we want is, in my opinion, one of the greatest gifts we’ve been given. Do I think that some people take that too far sometimes? Absolutely. Do I think that just because people can say something means that they should? A resounding no. But do I think that the government should censor us? Hell no!
I am not an advocate of government sponsored censorship. Perhaps, on occasion, it is beneficial but overall, I want the government out of my business. I am a mature, responsible adult who can decide for herself what is appropriate and not appropriate to watch, read or listen to. I have morals and standards that do not need policing by anyone but myself. I am perfectly capable of monitoring my what my child watches, reads and listens to as well.
I get that there needs to be rules and standards, particularly for network television and radio. That’s fine. But rules are different than censorship. Censorship, in my opinion, flies in the face of the First Amendment. And that’s wrong.
I’ve felt this way for a long time. Particularly since the 7th grade, though I’m not sure why. There is no distinct memory I have from that time that prompted me to feel this way but I do remember using today’s money tune, Cinderella’s “Shelter Me”, as a visual aid for a 7th grade English project. For what it’s worth, I got an A. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the song and the video, which I assure you has something to do with money:

How can I not comment on a Money Tune Tuesday that features a hard rock song? Love this song….and while I appreciate your perspective on government censorship it makes me think of all the years I tried to shelter my wife and family from our credit card debt. Same song, two great perspectives.
Good choice, musical twin… 🙂

I love your perspective–sheltering your family from your debt. I never thought of it that way but it’s true.
I’ll try to come up with another good one for you next week!

I missed so many great songs in my life. Thanks for bringing that one to my attention! And yes, censorship sucks and I also would like the government to back off.

Don’t worry about missing songs because you know them now! This is actually one of my favorites not only because it’s such a great song but because the lyrics and video are still relevant 20+years later.

Ah yes, big-hair glam rock. Nice pick! We all need a little (tax) shelter.

Can’t say I’m a fan of this one, but it’s funny to see the glam rockers. Why did Little Richard star in this video?

Honestly, Kay Lynn, I have no idea why Little Richard is in the video. It’s kind of funny, though.
