Having just finished David Shipler’s The Working Poor, I could not think of a more beautiful, poignant song to accompany that book than Billy Joel’s Downeaster Alexa. It’s not a long song, less than 4 minutes, and I really encourage you to watch it. I am literally moved to tears each time I hear the song and watch the video:

it's written by barbara ehrenreich. i've read it about 4 times. it's a pretty good book although i do have some issues with her attitude at times.
another excellent read is scratch beginnings by adam shepard. it's his response to ehrenreich's contention that there's no way someone who is considered working poor can get ahead.
