And now it’s October. Things are getting crazy busy, mostly in a good way, and I’m super excited for the fall weather and yoga pants and hoodies and I’m hoping to get in at least one more beach visit before it’s too cold so I can clear my head and regroup and actually get shit done this winter.
So let’s check in with the goings on from this first week in October:
-
- Had to let a few books go and only picked up one more from the library, The Couple Next Door, but I did finish 2: Adulting: How to Become a Grown-Up in 468 Easy(ish) Steps (this one is for my adulting starter kit project) and Heartbreaker: Stories (book of short stories). Both will be reviewed on Tuesday for Show Us Your Books‘ very special 2 year anniversary edition. We have giveaways to say thank you for 2 amazing bookish years! And apropos of nothing, here’s this funny:
- Only new show I’m watching this year is Designated Survivor. I’m quite enjoying it thus far.
- Did you guys know you could make phone calls for free using FB Messenger?! I had absolutely no idea this was an option until the other day. I’m irrationally and inexplicably overexcited about knowing this.
- Planning travel is something that is both stressful and exciting. Since we’re headed towards the end of the year, that means it’s time to start thinking about all the places I want to go next year and also where my budget will allow. Suffice it to say, they are not in agreement and they need to be because I turn 40 next year and some serious travel needs to happen to celebrate. Definitely on the list: Dallas and Orlando (the former for a conference, the latter for cheerleading provided the girls get a bid which I’m 100% confident they will because they’re that good except I’m not allowed to give proof or I have to go to cheer jail and trust when I say I don’t want that). Possibilities: London, Alaskan cruise, the Bahamas, and Myrtle Beach. If you’ve visited any or all of these, what do you recommend? And I know some of you are either from Dallas or frequently go there so what should I keep on my radar for next year?
- Confession: I did not watch the VP debate. Not only could I not stomach the thought of it, baseball playoffs were happening. The Orioles lost, by the way. So did my Mets. I now give zero fucks about the postseason with the caveat that I am rooting for the Cubs because 107 years is way too long of a drought. Hell, the Jews didn’t even wander the desert that long and we were LOST.
- I have been on a huge 90s music kick this week, most notably 311, Live, and Jimmy Eat World. I also found my old iPod and discovered some songs I forgot I love, like this one from Better Than Ezra (it’s actually particularly poignant this month, given the fact that it’s Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day on October 15th. I will most likely not write about this again since it’s too painful but will rerun my post from last year) Fun fact: their song “Cry in the Sun” is one of my top 5 all time favorite songs.
Ending the week with a visit with my grandmother and the child’s BFF’s birthday party, hopefully neither of which is ruined by remnants of Matthew. Hope all my Florida friends (and anyone else affected) are safe! See you guys on Tuesday for Show Us Your Books!

My husband makes fun of me for still liking Better than Ezra but it is what it is 🙂
Houston >>> Dallas (we kind of have a rivalry) but since it’s beyond your control, I get it. You have to have Texas BBQ, obviously, and Pecan Lodge is the best place in the area to go. The Kennedy Museum is pretty cool, if you’re into that – a self-guided audio tour in the book depository, or you can just walk around Dealey Plaza and see the x where the shot was fired for free. Oh and the Arboretum if the weather’s nice since it’s beautiful and worth the money (at least it is in the fall because pumpkins are everywhere). Oh and you also need Tex Mex because I’ve had Mexican food in Delaware and while some is good (that place in Lewes is pretty legit), you’ve got to get something here. At least a breakfast taco. OH and a kolache! You guys don’t have those up north!
Lauren says
Ugh, I mean where the shot hit Kennedy. Where it was fired from is of course, a great mystery 😉

So many good ideas here!!! Thank you!! (runs to write them down so I don’t forget). Fun fact: my husband and I met in a college class where our instructor was OBSESSED with the Kennedy assassination (second fun fact: Steph was in the class, too, and she is basically the reason we met) so it’s basically essential that I go to the book depository. And you and Erin have mentioned Houston so now I’m thinking I need to fly out a couple of days early and spend one of those days in Houston.
No shame in the BTE love!

I got caught up watching the VP debate … because its like when you have to look at a car wreck on the road.
That grammar funny – YES!!!
I actually really am loving The Designated Survivor. I’m actually this moment listening to a podcast about it too 🙂

There’s a podcast about it already?!
This whole election is a car wreck. It’s horrifying.

been 2017 travel planning as well and we just booked our Feb Mount Tremblant trip! 5 glorious days of snow boarding, eating/drinking/sitting by the fire next year 🙂
go to London! it’s a hop skip jump away from the other amazing European countries.

My aunt is advocating for London as well. It’s so hard to choose! (Oh, and over the summer, we might be making a stop in Toronto during a long weekend upstate NY/Niagara Falls. My daughter desperately wants to do the Canadian side)

I wasn’t going to watch the VP debate (because I’ve been a ball of anxiety lately) but then I realized, I barely know this Tim Kaine dude. At all. I wanted to see him in action. I already knew Mike Pence was a monster of epic proportions and was nervous he’d wipe the floor with sweet ol’ Tim. Uh? Not quite. Hillary’s running mate must have had a serious pep talk in the mirror before that thing cause he came GUNS BLAZING. Now we have another standoff between Hillary and Donald Sunday night. God help us all…
Jana says
I know I SHOULD know about the VPs but I couldn’t do it. And I regret every minute I spent watching the debate last night.

311 and Better Than Ezra are my jams and are both solid on a few playlists of mine. I couldn’t stand to be bothered with the VP debate either. I am just about over the whole election in general. All of your travel plans sound awesome. I have never been to any of the places you mentioned to give you any advice. No one ever wants to come to Birmingham 🙁 Haha Hope you have a great weekend!
Jana says
One of my travel goals is to do a cross country road trip. I will totally detour through Birmingham when I do it 🙂
I love my 90s music. It makes me happy.

I have two trips planned for 2017 but am floating another mid-size trip and another weekend trip but budget might not allow for either of those. So many places I want to go, so hard to choose.
I picked up The Couple Next Door on Wednesday!
Jana says
I’m a pretty decisive person but picking where to travel to leaves me helpless and flustered and overwhelmed.

Haha I’m rooting for the for the same reason. After the Pirates are out, I’m generally out, too. Not to be nit picky, but isn’t 40 years or 40 days and 40 nights a euphemism? So they COULD have been in the desert for 107 years.
I’m just trying to hold out hopes for the Cubbies here.
We did Myrtle last year and had a blast. It’s like East Coast Vegas but there’s a ton of fun stuff for kids, too. All other options sound amazing, too, though—you’ve got some hard decisions to make!
Also, I totally forgot about Better than Ezra. Thanks for making my day that much better.

Yes, it’s metaphorical but I thought it was funny.
The travel decisions are hard. I do have some good ideas for us for Dallas, though!

If you can squeeze in a day in Fort Worth when you go to Dallas, I recommend it. I prefer Fort Worth over Dallas (and Houston, my hometown). If you do this, I can recommend some things. I do not see Australia on your wish list.
I do love me some ’90s music because some hair bands were still in heavy rotation, but other bands worked their way into my world too. Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra, Hootie and the Blowfish, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Blues Traveller…they all make appearances on my work playlist that I listen to everyday in the shop.

Australia is its own separate thing because I want to go for at least two weeks. These were just week long or less adventures. And I want to go out a couple of days early to explore. I have no problems renting a car for those few days so I will definitely get your recommendations.
I heard But Anyway on the radio a few days ago and lost my shit. I forgot how much I loved that song.
