My favorite iPhone apps

March 19, 2012 by Jana 6 Comments

For those of you who met me at FinCon last year, you probably noticed that not only did I not have an iPad, I didn’t have a smartphone of any kind either. At that point in my life, the phone that I was using was completely satisfactory, even if I couldn’t do anymore than talk, text, take pictures and kind of use the Internet. But as I watched everyone at the conference, I realized maybe, just maybe, a smartphone would be kind of fun (and helpful) to have. It was around that time that Apple announced the iPhone 4s. So I did what any smart person would do.

I ordered that one.

Yes, for my very first smartphone I went with the newest model possible. The frugal side of me wanted to buy a refurbished older generations but the really selfish side of me wanted the new one. I figured that it was fine to buy this one because I had never, ever paid for a phone before. I had always gotten the free one that came with my plan and, since I planned on renewing my contract with my carrier (yes, I have a contract and I’m totally fine with it), the phone was at a deeply reduced cost.

For the data plan, I picked the lowest one possible to start. I wanted to see exactly how much data I was using before I bought a more expensive plan. If the cheapest gave me what I needed, there was no reason to increase it. And, lucky for me, it was just enough!

Then came the apps. I find the App Store to be completely overwhelming and I truly didn’t know where to start. I had heard that The Oregon Trail was available, so I bought that. And I put Facebook and a few other ones that, for some reason, I really thought I needed. But I knew I wasn’t using my phone to its fullest potential (and I’m pretty sure I still don’t). So I started doing some research and looking around and asking friends that have iPhones which apps they use the most. From that I was able to cull from the massive app store the ones that really make a difference for me.

Here are a few:

  • Pandora. I cannot stand to work or drive or pretty much do anything in silence. I don’t want to overwhelm my phone’s memory with downloading songs, I’m really bad at remembering to charge my iPod, and the radio gets really awful at times. With Pandora, I love being able to stream all of the stations I’ve created no matter where I am. The commercials don’t bother me because they’re really quick and only happen about every 7 songs or so. I’ll deal with a 30 second commercial every 20 minutes or so for all of that free music.
  • BookLover. I read. A lot. And I have an extremely extensive handwritten list of books I want to read. However, whenever I’m in a place like a library or bookstore where I’m in a position to actually obtain one of these books, I realize I’ve left the list at home. BookLover is an app that makes it so easy to keep the list with me. You get to create a bookshelf which populates itself with the book art once you enter the title. You can even make little notes and stuff about the books. The best part? It’s free!
  • MyFitnessPal. When you’re trying to lose weight frugally, one of the best ways to do it is to write down what you eat to keep track of calories, how much water you drink, how much exercise you do…everything involved in paying attention and being careful. MyFitnessPal makes this so easy. You can enter your weight every day, and, when you’re done entering your calories and exercise for the day, the app will give you a little message that tells you how much you’d weigh 5 weeks from that day if every day were like that. Having the app on my phone, which is always with me, gives me no excuse to not track what I’ve done. This app? Is also free!
  • Weave. I love this app because it gives me a way to track and categorize all of my daily to-dos, as well as provides a way to track income earned or money spent on a particular project. I can also track bigger projects, complete with to-dos and money related events as well. It gives the option to email my progress on projects to myself or to anyone else who might need to see it. For someone like me, this is a lot easier than keeping track on paper to-do lists (which are slowly taking over my life). And, of course this one is free!
I also have some practical apps, like the one for my bank, my teaching job, Twitter, and WordPress. I also have Words With Friends (which I almost never use), a Barbie game for the child, and a few others that I won’t bore you with.
I know that I don’t use my phone to its fullest potential. I know that I should. I’m just proud of myself that I’m getting there.
Readers, what apps do you use that make your life easier? Which ones do you recommend that I download and try out?

The day the kitchen floor melted

February 8, 2012 by Jana 27 Comments

My kitchen floor is tiled, DIY-style. Pretty impressive, right? It probably won’t be once you find out the reason why.

When we moved in, our kitchen floor was a lovely laminate. Not the nicest in the world, but certainly not the worst. For the amount of time we planned on being in the house (we’ll get into that another day), it was sufficient. Sturdy enough to handle our family’s traffic yet easy enough to clean.  It was also neutral enough that we could pretty much choose any color paint for the walls. A few other cosmetic changes and our kitchen would be exactly what we wanted in our starter house. Simple and easy.

Until the day I melted the floor.

It was totally an accident and it happened in a fit of sheer stupidity. I was cooking dinner (salmon) in a pan on the stove. I turned away for a minute or so (fine, I forgot what I was doing and started on something else) and the next thing I knew, the salmon started to burn. Like really burn. And it stunk. And it was smoking. And I wanted it out of the house before the smoke detector went off and my dog had a coronary.

At this point, I had two choices. Choice one: throw the pan in the sink, fight with the window above the sink and let the smoke and smell dissipate that way. Choice two: put the pan on the deck. Which do you think I chose? That’s right. Not the first choice, which made sense. Nope, my dumb ass went for option 2. Almost.

Our deck, like most decks, is made of wood. In my panicked state I started to think “Ohmygod. If I put the pan on the deck, the deck will catch fire! I can’t put the pan on the deck!” So I didn’t. Instead, I opened the door to the deck (which is off our kitchen) and put the pan on the floor inside so the smoke and smell would blow out the door. Problem solved!

Not really. [Read more…]

Outsourcing chores

December 22, 2011 by Jana 18 Comments

A few years ago, at the recommendation of a co-worker, I read Tim Ferriss’s “The 4 Hour Work Week”. To be honest, I hated the book. I thought that he came off as pompous, rude, snobby and kind of douchey. Most of what he discussed could in no way, shape or form be applied to my life and my situation. Except for one idea. Outsourcing.

Quite frankly, I love the idea of outsourcing the unpleasant aspects of my life. I would love to be rid of the chores that I can’t stand so that I can focus on the things that I do love and want to cultivate. And, if I think about it, I already do outsource some things—haircuts, dog grooming, trash and recycling pick up, and car maintenance. I don’t mind paying for these services because they are convenient, make my life easier and honestly, no one wants me cutting his or her hair. Or working on a car.

The problem is that I want to outsource household chores. I’m not the most domestically inclined woman around. While I do enjoy some things like cooking and baking and child care and general errands, there are certain things I cannot stand. Those are the ones I would like to eliminate. But the cost for outsourcing those chores is way too expensive for my budget. Or is it? I decided to do a little research and come up with an amount that I would have to pay each month to outsource the 3 things I hate the most:

Laundry

Dane Cook once joked that the only way to completely have no laundry is to wash your clothes naked. Sadly, he’s right. Laundry is a cruel joke, especially when you have a child and dogs. I am forever stuck in a cycle of wash, dry, fold, put away. Repeat the next day. I think I spend a minimum of 10 hours a week doing laundry for my family (fortunately, my husband does his own laundry. This is a huge blessing). While I’m able to complete other tasks while the washer and dryer are running, it’s still annoying to be in the middle of a task only to have to stop to attend to the laundry. Not to mention that I hate the whole laundry process. So I wondered what it would cost to have someone do my laundry for me.

I looked around and there are services that will wash and fold my clothes. Here’s the info on the                   cheapest company I found:  $1.25 a pound with a minimum of 10.  That’s just for your standard wash, dry, fold that is supposedly done according to my explicit directions. They claim to have no extra fees, including delivery. Let’s assume I have 25 pounds of laundry per week. That’s a minimum cost of $125 per month. However, they don’t say how long it would take to complete the service, and I have to schlep my clothes to the place and pick them up.

The verdict? Not worth it. I’m not really saving any time by having to drive back and forth to the place, it’s expensive compared to doing it myself and I’m basically a slave to their time frame.

Cleaning

I’ll admit it. I’m a terrible housekeeper. My house would never be deemed uninhabitable as I insist that beds are made, bathrooms are tidy and there are no dirty dishes all over the house. However, I’m lazy with dusting and vacuuming, my kitchen floors don’t gleam, toys are usually all over my living room and laundry is usually everywhere (see above about how I hate laundry). My husband and I do the best we can but my house never looks quite clean enough. I would love to have one of those houses that sparkle. But with me in charge, it’s not going to happen.

Enter a cleaning service. These are pros whose job it is to make my house sparkle in that commercial, TV show way. I did use a cleaning service last year, just prior to Thanksgiving, in order to get my house respectable enough to have company. That service cost $220 for 2 hours but I figured it was expensive due to the fact that it was an initial, deep cleaning. If I remember correctly, it was approximately $100 per week for regular home maintenance, based on the size of my house and what would need to be done.  Let’s say I have the service come 2 times per month. That’s roughly $200 and I would have to stay home (I have extreme paranoia issues and can’t stand when people I don’t know are left unattended in my home).

The verdict? It’s a possibility. I loathe cleaning and I’m not good at. Additionally, a cleaning service would free up time for me to work on my blog or other projects.

Food shopping

There is nothing that makes me more anxious than the thought of a supermarket on a Saturday or Sunday morning. The small aisles, the shopping cart collisions, the wrath at the deli counter, the agony at the register. It all makes me grimace with displeasure. Unfortunately, this is the one chore per week that I cannot put off (have I mentioned that I purposefully have 3 weeks of clothes and underwear so that I can go that long without doing laundry?). I’d send my husband but he loves supermarkets like I love MAC and I fear for our budget. So each week, armed with my budget, my list and my body armor, I trudge to the supermarket for what is the worst hour and half of my week. And every week that I’m there, I wish there was a way to avoid this horror.

I have learned that there is! Apparently, my grocery store has a service where I can order my food online and then a refrigerated truck will deliver the groceries right to my front door! This is fantastic! After the first delivery, which is free, there is a delivery charge which is based on the amount of food ordered (<$150 has one set of fees, >$150 has another) and the time frame in which the food is delivered. However, like the cable companies, your food has a delivery window and the delivery charge is based on the window you pick. Let’s say I pick the 4 hour delivery window. That would run me $3.95, for a total of $103.95 each week.

The verdict? I’d give it a try for free. Although I am freaked out by the thought of someone else handling my groceries, it might be worth it to avoid having the headache of food shopping. Besides, while I’m waiting, I can always do laundry or clean!

Do you outsource any household chores? What value do you get from it (besides time)?

Financing options for a new home

December 15, 2011 by Jana Leave a Comment

My husband and I plan on purchasing a new house next year. We’ve been putting it off for quite a while now, first because of pay cuts at our jobs and then because of our daughter entering kindergarten. Well, come January, we’ll know if she won the charter school lottery and we’ll finally be able to decide where we’re moving.

The big question we’ve been facing, besides where to live and what type of house to buy is whether we should get a 15-year or 30-year mortgage. Now, ideally, I’d like to have no mortgage but since paying 100% for a house or having a paid-for house given to us is close to impossible, we’ve been discussing what to do.  We know that we’d like to have our house paid for as soon as possible, which means that we should go with the 15-year mortgage. And by using a mortgage interest calculator, it’s clear that we’d save a good amount on interest by going this route.

Then there’s the issue of the monthly payment. We really don’t want to have a higher payment than we have now but the houses that we’re looking at all cost more than our current house. We have some equity in our current house and we can use that, and we have some savings, but I’m not sure that it’s enough to bring the payment down to what we pay now. I guess we’ll have to do some serious looking, negotiating and compromising.

There are other mortgage options besides the traditional 15 and 30-year options, most of which I refuse to use (ARM, interest only) and after what’s happened in the housing market, I’m actually surprised still exist. We’ll have to be very savvy and ask a lot of questions so we don’t get screwed (which I’m hoping doesn’t happen since our debt to income ratio is quite good and we have excellent credit).  I want a new house, but I don’t want one bad enough to have my finances wrecked or become house poor.

We’re not interested in converting our current house into a rental property nor or we interested in buying an investment property but should we ever get to that point, there is something called a buy to let mortgage that we can use and by using a buy to let mortgage calculator, we’d be able to determine what our payments would be. Who knows? Maybe one day we’ll become real estate moguls and this might be our ticket to that.

Buying our first house was an enormous learning experience. But we knew it wasn’t going to be our permanent house. I need to take the mistakes we made last time, write them down and then make sure those don’t happen again!
