Show Us Your Books, March 2018

March 13, 2018 by Jana 47 Comments

Remember how last month I said that my reading was at a glacial pace? Well, it still is. Having cheer competitions every weekend interferes with reading and during the week, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. That’s a lie. I do know. It’s called Netflix. I keep finding shows I binge watch instead of read books. I’m totally fine with it and although I know my Goodreads goal is arbitrary bullshit, I find myself getting sad and frustrated that I’m behind (technically I’m “on track” but really, I’m behind).

I genuinely don’t know why I put so much pressure on myself to read more because it accomplishes nothing. I guess when you get used to one thing and it dwindles, it feels unnatural.

Show Us Your Books. Join the Link-Up! Talk books the 2nd Tuesday of Every Month

That said, I finished 6 books this month. Not great but it could be worse.

The Breakdown by B.A. Paris. I get why people are in love with this book. I do. But for me it was meh. I think because I figured out the twist early on, it wasn’t a surprise when she revealed it. Getting there was frustrating and I mostly kept reading to see if I was right. She does write well and the plot is twisty although there were a couple of plot points that felt unnecessary and out of place. Not a bad book but not my favorite. Solid mass market thriller.

You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero. I picked up this book mainly out of curiosity from all the rave reviews. I completely understand why so many have bought into it (no pun intended). She’s empowering and funny and relatable and makes this seem like something accessible that everyone and anyone can do. But manifesting and NLP don’t do it for me as an exclusive method for achieving goals and, as such, a lot of the content was hard for me to buy into. The end of chapter exercises seem helpful to get you focused and organized.

13 Minutes by Sarah Pinborough. A solid crime story that didn’t read like the description. I’m not disappointed into the disparity because had it actually been that, the book would have sucked. I don’t even know what made me read this in the first place. It was full of twists and turns, some predictable and some not, and was told through narrative, interviews, and diary entries so that was fun to read. It’s a YA book and had all the hallmarks of that but nothing to the point of distraction. It took time to find its groove but worth getting there in the end.

Force of Nature by Jane Harper. While I like Aaron Falk as a character, and can’t wait to read more books about him (if there are more), this book was underwhelming especially as a follow up to The Dry. It felt like she tried to cram too much into this story, some of which needed to be removed or lessened in detail, and it felt disjointed at times.  It became stronger towards the end, like the plot and storytelling finally found its rhythm. Like The Breakdown, it’s a solid mass market mystery.

Educated by Tara Westover. I have no idea what to say about this book. I’m struggling with reviewing it, honestly. I’m fascinated, disgusted, horrified, incredulous, skeptical, enraged…all the feels. She is an incredibly intelligent woman who grew up under awful circumstances that were not entirely awful at times. Part of the story feels like it’s missing but since it’s written as a memoir, that’s to be expected since memory isn’t perfect. At it’s core, this is a story about family, survival, faith, mental illness, control, and education beyond books. It’s about what you can accomplish despite your circumstances AND because of them. This book has been compared to The Glass Castle, which is fair, but it’s also entirely its own things.

House Arrest by K.A. Holt. A middle grade book that punches you in your adult gut. I’m not generally a fan of free verse poetry but it works here. This is a quick, powerful, thoughtful book that sends a hell of a message about morality and right v wrong. The ending is hard and sad and couldn’t have been any other way. It’s definitely a MG book despite being labeled YA and it is written as such. So if that bothers you, pass on it. But my daughter is reading it now and she is enjoying it if that helps.

Currently reading: Providence by Caroline Kepnes. On deck: Crimes in Southern in Indiana and some NetGalley book I’ll choose at random.

TL;DR: All the books are just fine. Educated is probably the best one I read all month and House Arrest is a close second.

Weekly recap, 2018, v8

March 9, 2018 by Jana 10 Comments

I don’t have much to recap this week because I’ve spent all of it sick. Thankfully not the flu but a really disgusting, feverish cold that rendered me a bump on the couch. Which was a nice way to recover from a weekend in Richmond. And hide from the snow.

Reading. Educated. Finished Force of Nature. Got nothing from the library or NetGalley or Kindle. But I did learn that Jodi Picoult and Amy Stewart have new books this year so that’s exciting. Don’t forget Show Us Your Books on Tuesday!

Watching. Flint Town. It’s a docuseries on Netflix about the Flint, MI police department. I’m on episode 3 and have mixed feelings about it. But I’ll finish it because my interest is piqued.

Listening. Remember last week when I stomped my feet in an impatient tantrum because Shinedown hadn’t released their summer tour schedule? WELL. THEY DID. And I cannot wait! Plus their new song debuted this week. It KICKS ASS and I can’t stop listening to it.

Drinking. Tea. Lots and lots of tea. And, fun fact, I didn’t have coffee for a week and I didn’t miss it. An interesting development in my life.

Wondering. If I should by the handheld Oregon Trail game from Target. Seriously. Should I buy it?

Laughing. At some things I saw on the internet and forgot to save so I can share them. Not sure why I brought it up.

Well, I’m off to the movies this weekend. The child wants to see A Wrinkle in Time and since we have this weekend free from any family or cheerleading obligations, I’m going to take her. I’m not thrilled about going to the movies on a weekend but sometimes we have to do things we don’t like.

See you on Tuesday when we talk books!

Dear Daughter: A letter about money

March 8, 2018 by Jana 10 Comments

Last week, I committed to join a whole bunch of other female bloggers to talk about money on this International Women’s Day. They do it regularly but I don’t so if you want to truly learn about money, you should check out what they have to say. As for me, this is inspired by Halestorm’s “Dear Daughter”. Sort of.

But before we get to that, I want to say something about financial abuse. We don’t talk about it because, like most conversations about money, it’s uncomfortable and unlike bruises, invisible. It’s easy to hide account balances and debts. No one is going to blink if a friend says she doesn’t have cash to go out to lunch or buy a gift for a coworker or get a manicure or even buy a pack of gum. And if you know someone like this, it probably wouldn’t occur to you she’s in a financially abusive situation. Odds are, she’s not and she’s just watching her money.

But you never know.

Financial abuse is real, it is dangerous, and it is worse than physical threats. It is isolating, humiliating, frustrating, and exhausting. Because by taking away someone’s financial power, you take away their freedom and autonomy. You take away their ability to leave, to get help, to stand on their own. It’s what abusers want and it’s what we, those who stand up for the abused, must combat.

Please, take some time to learn the signs of financial abuse so if you or someone you love finds themselves in this situation, you can help. Before you can’t.

And now…this.

When I think about money advice, I generally find myself at a loss. God knows I’m not a model of financial perfection and I’ve made, and continue to make, my share of mistakes. But I know a thing or two about a thing or two (kudos to you if you read that in Robert DeNiro’s voice and even more kudos if you know what movie I’m referring to) and I figured it’d be a good idea to write those things down. In letter form.

Dear Daughter,

Along the way, I’ve been trying to teach you some things. Like how to wear eye makeup that doesn’t make you look like Alice Cooper. How to cook food so you don’t starve. How to use your manners but also how to curse responsibly. And I like to think I’ve been teaching you about managing money and having a healthy relationship with it.

But just in case I haven’t been clear, here’s a few things I want you to learn:

  • Know your worth and never let anyone tell you you’re not worth it.
  • Negotiating is your friend. Learn how to do it fairly and responsibly and remember that if an offer isn’t good, walk away.
  • Liking money is okay. Wanting to make lots of money, and having lots of money, is also okay. However, it’s entirely unacceptable to treat someone who has less than you like they have no value.
  • Be a boss. You don’t have to be THE boss but be A boss at whatever you choose to do.
  • Your money is your money. You do with it what you want and it’s no one’s place to shame you or judge you for it. If they do, fuck ’em.
  • Also, if you want to share your money with a spouse or partner, you go right ahead. But you stay on top of that shit. You know your budget and income and expenses. DO NOT turn a blind eye and let your partner dictate how your money is spent. Know what financial infidelity looks like.
  • Don’t want to share and feel more comfortable keeping your funds separate? That’s fine, too. Don’t let anyone bully you into thinking otherwise.
  • A man (or woman) is not a financial plan. Cool slogan, right? I didn’t make it up but I do agree with it. You need to learn to take care of yourself because relying on someone else to do it is dangerous. And if you do choose to be a stay-at-home mom, I support you but make sure you know how to manage your money, where you have your investments, understand your insurance policies, and all the other financial basics. Stay involved in your household finances. Financial literacy is everything.
  • Save and invest for your future, and prepare for emergencies. They will happen and you need to be ready for whatever life throws at you whenever they are thrown at you.
  • Debt’s going to happen. It’s okay. We all make mistakes. But what’ll set you apart is your ability to put on your big girl panties and face it.
  • Help other women. You’ve heard me say that success isn’t cake. There’s more than enough for everyone. And the only way all women can succeed is by supporting each other and lifting each other up. So use their services, shop at their stores, watch their movies, buy their books, hire them at your company. When I say use your money for good, this is what I mean.
  • LEARN TO BUDGET. Yeah, I’m screaming. But if you don’t know this, everything else is a big giant waste.
  • Use your money to better the world. Give to charities and causes you believe in.
  • You are not your income, your house, your car, your job, your clothes, or your purse. You are not your debts or loans or bad investments or financial mistakes. You are not what is or isn’t in your wallet and you’re certainly not your budget. Money doesn’t make you who you are.

Is this everything I want you to know? No. I think it’s impossible to capture all of that in one reasonable length letter. You’re a smart kid, though, so I know you’ll figure out what’s missing when you need to.

You know, money is a weird thing. It’s necessary to live and it gives you choices and options. But you have to use it responsibly and pay attention and educate yourself in the ways of money or honestly, you’re pretty much screwed.

We don’t live in a time anymore (thankfully) where women are expected to be meek and quiet and let their husbands take care of everything. No. We now live in a time when women speak up and take ownership of themselves and their finances.

And it’s okay to do so.

So you go out there and you kick ass like I know you can.

Love, Mom

P.S. Here’s the source if you want to listen. Have tissues nearby.

Weekly recap, 2018, v7

March 2, 2018 by Jana 6 Comments

Short and sweet, from my phone. Saving the rants for next week.

Reading. Force of Nature. Picked up House Arrest and Educated from the library. Nothing from Amazon or NetGalley.

Watching. Seven Seconds and Everything Sucks on Netflix. Very different but both very good.

Waiting. For freaking Shinedown to announce their summer tour. I budgeted for 3 shows and if they’re not going to be nearby I’d like to find something else. I’m also waiting to see which shows are free courtesy of the Ticketmaster settlement.

Planning. Two days in NYC in April! Well, sort of. I have an event to go to in the evening but definitely heading to The Strand beforehand and not sure what I want to do before I get on the train home. I’ll be back in June so I’m not overly concerned with missing something but I am SO EXCITED to get away for something unrelated to cheerleading.

Loving. That I finally, FINALLY found a food Lizzy will eat. Old man Barkley is on a prescription diet so he gets no say in anything but Lizzy was proving to be a very picky eater. After a LOOOOONG conversation with a very knowledgeable woman at my local pet store, I found something Lizzy inhales instead of rejects and doesn’t cause me anxiety or hurt my morals. Everyone wins!

Laughing. Well, fuck me for thinking I could do it but the video I wanted to share isn’t shareable except on fucking Facebook so here’s the link: https://www.facebook.com/forklyfood/videos/10154927189331246/

And this weekend I am off to Richmond for cheerleading! That makes three weekends in a row and I am very much anticipating next weekend’s cheer-free living. Hope you guys have a great weekend doing whatever it is you do!

Three things in March

March 1, 2018 by Jana 12 Comments

I meant to start doing this regularly in February but clearly that dream is dead. So we pick up the pieces and start in March.

This round of questions came from some of you guys (I apologize but I forgot to write down who asked each question) and some from thin air.

Let’s get to it.

  • The Lilac Girls

3 books everyone hated that I loved

  • The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley (I don’t think this one is universally reviled but I definitely liked it more than most)
  • Looking for Alaska (or one of John Green’s books. Might have been Paper Towns. Definitely not An Abundance of Katherines. That book was not good at all)
  • The Kopp sisters books (again, not universally reviled but I fangirl over them way more than most people I know)

3 common things I cannot do

  • Whistle
  • Snap my fingers
  • Parallel park

3 popular shows I’ve never seen

  • Game of Thrones
  • This is Us
