Hey, it’s okay: Vacation edition

March 29, 2016 by Jana 12 Comments

Amber over at Airing My Laundry hosts a linkup every Tuesday. Sometimes I like to join in. Today’s one of those times.

Hey, It's Okay!

For me, it’s okay that:

    • We totally hired a pet sitter because of our cat. Not the dogs. The cat. Who sometimes has to be forced back into the house. The cat who will probably sleep outside every night we’re gone, defeating the whole purpose of having a pet sitter. The cat who won’t go near a single person except me because she’s an asshole who hates everyone.
    • I bought a bunch of our tickets for Boston attractions and hotels with Groupons or credit card rewards or using online discounts. I like to travel but there’s no need to always pay full price.
    • I haven’t gone full grocery shopping in like two weeks because of our vacation. I don’t need to come home to rotting food. I’m also dreading the big, expensive shopping trip coming up. Because it means lots of groceries to put away. I don’t like to do that.
    • I am ridiculously excited to have a week free of everything. Laundry, work, cooking, chores, cheerleading, the parent pickup line…all of it.
    • I feel no pressure to share my whole vacation on social media. But I’m sharing some so go ahead and follow me on Instagram for a week free of cat and dog pictures (but, let’s be honest, if I find a cat or dog, I’m taking a picture).
    • I totally want to find a historic bookstore or at least make a stop at the Boston public library because books don’t stop for vacations.
    • The history nerd in my is going berserk over all the American history we’re going to see. We also might take a trip to Colonial Williamsburg in May after US Finals in Virginia Beach and this makes my heart and brain insanely happy.
    • That a small part of me wishes we were headed somewhere warm because who in their right mind goes to Boston in March?
    • We only planned a 5 day trip so it can be bookended with weekends, giving us time to gear up and then recover. Also Easter.
    • I enjoy my job but this:

Also linking up with Nadine and Kathy for Humpday Confessions a day early because confession, I don’t have enough content ideas for more than 3 posts a week.

This week in…: The twelfth in 2016

March 25, 2016 by Jana 19 Comments

this week

  • Finished The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend. Started Evicted (NetGalley) and will be bringing that and American Housewife with me on vacation next week. Put The Nest on hold. I don’t ordinarily put new, megahyped releases on hold immediately but something about this book is making me need to read it NOW. Don’t forget, next Show Us Your Books is April 12th. It will be here very soon.
  • iTunes approved The Armchair Librarians!! As of this writing, we’re still not in the directory but we will be soon! listen
  • Found a dead cat on the road behind my house. It looked identical to my cat but thankfully, it was not. We learned this after my husband inspected the dead cat’s face (and after I picked it up off the road, thinking it was my cat and she needed a proper burial). This is why I HATE having an indoor/outdoor cat. We also gave the not our cat a name and burial (Mrs. Louie Meowzer, RIP. Also, the child named her).
  • My daughter’s cheer squad is going to US Finals! Talk about an emotional decision. Long story short, they should have won but made a huge mistake in their routine and it cost them first place and a paid bid but we’re going anyway. Virginia Beach, we’re coming for you! My poor wallet is screaming, though. Can you hear it?
  • Made taco stuffed peppers. Super easy. Cook turkey or ground beef and season with your favorite taco seasoning like you would if you were making regular tacos (I use a homemade one that I’d link to except I can’t remember my Pinterest password to get it from my laptop). Cut 4 peppers (any color but we used green) in half and spoon the taco filling into pepper halves. Sprinkle (or use heaping handfuls. Your choice) your favorite cheese and bake at 350 for roughly 20 minutes. Top with salsa, guacamole, sour cream or whatever else you feel like using because you’re an adult and can top your food with whatever you want. Stuff it in your eating hole.
  • Am currently 3 episodes behind in Better Call Saul and 4 in Generation X. I blame House of Cards.
  • BOUGHT CARNIVAL OF MADNESS TICKETS!!!
  • Got my speaker badge for FinCon16 that WP won’t let me upload for “security reasons”. WTF, WordPress? But I do have all kinds of feelings about being a speaker for realz and not just running a mentoring session. Public speaker I am not.
  • Internet reads: A whole bunch of things people wish their friends knew about depression (from Buzzfeed). This real life version of The Leisure Seeker (and you should totally follow her on Facebook. It’s amazing to watch and she is my idol). This perspective on child support from a man who loves his children but is hugely delinquent in his payments.
  • Funnies: IMG_1875 IMG_1873 IMG_1871

That’s all for me this week. I’m headed to Boston on Monday so if you don’t see me around next week, you’ll know why. I still have some posts coming at you, including a new episode of The Armchair Librarians on Thursday (tacked to the bottom of a post, per usual). I don’t know how many pictures I’ll be sharing but you can follow along on Instagram if you want. See you when I get back! And happy Easter!

A list of things I can’t stand including thinking of post titles

March 24, 2016 by Jana 16 Comments

Just about two years ago, I wrote a confessions post about some pretty substantive things that make my angry. As I’m suffering from minor writer’s block/idea deficiency and also I’m already in vacation mode (we leave for Boston in less than a week!), I decided that it’d be a good idea to update that list except with really small petty things that annoy me rather than things that are major or important because that’s how I’m feeling right now. It’s also an accompaniment to this post about all my pet peeves which made me realize I should do a post about all the things I love so I don’t always come across like a curmudgeonly old man.

So, here’s a not at all complete list of things I hate (also known as major first world problems):

  • Oranges and all of its related orange-citrus brethren.
  • Horses. Keep them away from me, please and thank you.
  • Hangers that are all askew and face different directions. Not to mention when they’re mixed with wire hangers.
  • Punctuation abuse. Especially on professional signs. Guess what? If you say you’re “licensed and insured”, we’re not doing business.
  • Seeing someone in a movie or on TV and not being able to remember where I’ve seen them before.
  • Thinking of titles for posts.
  • Typing in a password and being told it’s wrong even though I know it’s right. And while we’re on the password subject, being asked to change it every few months or so. NO, M&T Bank, I don’t want to do that. I can barely remember this one and now you want me to have a new one?
  • Bad handwriting on feedback forms. How can I fix what’s wrong if I can’t read what you wrote? (I don’t have a problem with bad handwriting in general. Just when I need to read it).
  • Finding a movie on HBO and coming in halfway and then wanting to record the next showing because who wants to start a movie they’ve never seen in the middle only to find out that this is the only showing. WHY YOU TEASE ME, HBO?
  • Realizing a dog who’s not my dog has shit in my yard and the lazy ass owner didn’t pick it up. It’s all fun and games until someone steps in dog shit and tracks it in the house.
  • Speaking of dogs, why does my dog wait until I’m actually and finally comfortable to whine at me that he needs to go out even after I’ve just let him out and he chooses not to do anything except walk around and bother the cat?
  • This little piece of my car door that won’t attach to the rest of the door and flaps in the wind when I’m driving.
  • The term “hack” as in “life hacks”, “productivity hacks”, “cooking hacks”. Can’t we change it up with “shortcuts” or something else? I also hate the terms “solopreneur” and “lady boss”.
  • That iTunes will not let me change my user ID. Fuck you, iTunes.
  • Bad people like the Duggars getting second chances. Look, I’m all for giving second chances but not in the manner that they’re getting. I felt the same way about Michael Vick. He did his time, paid his penance, whatever you want to call it, and he totally deserved to be given a job and all of that but not in the manner that he did. If you do something as bad or reprehensible as the Duggars or Vick, then you should not be put in a position where people use you as a role model. Yes, you can argue that they deserve adulation because they reformed but let’s be honest, have the Duggars truly reformed? Have they apologized for all the hate they’ve spewed or the hypocrisy in which they’ve conducted their lives? Have they adjusted their beliefs after seeing the damage its done to their family? No, they have not. So maybe thrusting them back into the spotlight with millions of dollars and paid vacations and all that jazz is blatantly wrong. And shame on TLC for giving it to them. And shame on me for writing about it and giving them even more attention. (You sort of knew this rant was coming, right?) But I still fucking hate them.
  • The Oregon Trail app no longer works on my iPad.
  • Being told I need to drink wine. No. I don’t like wine. I will stick with my beer.
  • Fees attached to buying concert tickets. Really, they’re expensive enough. Why do I need to pay an extra $40 billion in processing fees? And what exactly is a “processing fee”? Sounds like a scam to me.
  • Website design. I need to design two websites as well as a complete makeover for this one and while I’m good at content, I’m terrible at design and I can’t afford to pay someone to do my designs. Awesome for me. But thankfully Fiverr exists so I can get a few things done there for cheap until I can afford something better.

Let’s end this on something I don’t hate. Another episode of The Armchair Librarians! This time we talk about finding time to read and assorted other topics because reading rabbit holes are easy to find when you’re me and Steph. A few things: one, this is one of the websites I need to design. Two, there’s a terrible echo towards the middle and end of the recording that makes it sound like Steph is in a bathroom even though to my knowledge she isn’t and I can’t edit it out so we apologize for that. Three, I finally figured out how to get this thing in iTunes so it should be there next week. Four, we have a few tweaks we’re making to the quality of the podcast so look out for those in upcoming shows (read: not this one or the next).new_logo_edit

This week in…: The 11th one in 2016

March 18, 2016 by Jana 16 Comments

Daylight savings time fuck anyone else up this week? Time changes normally don’t affect me too much but this year, it’s kicked my ass. Brutally. So much so that I literally have no idea what happened. I will do my best to remember and recap:

  • Started The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend. It’s a cute little book thus far that of course mentions meth. I truly can’t escape it. Picked up nothing new because I have made a commitment to my ebooks that I will read them. DNF Skippy Dies. Sorry, Skippy.
  • Binged on Bosch. So good. Watch it if you can.
  • Continued to weep for this country as Trump’s winning streak remains intact and the Duggars returned to TV. Also, now that there’s a SCOTUS nomination, that should make for a nice side show that is the circus of this election.
  • Made chicken noodle soup in the crockpot. Put the noodles in too early. They dissolved. But it made for a nice creamy texture without any milk or cream. That was a fun discovery.
  • Found out rage yoga is a real thing.  I NEED IT IN MY LIFE.
  • Bought this:
When this is the name of a lipstick, you fucking buy it

  • Internet reads: from two of my blogger friends, Happiness Is and I Like Other Women. And this letter to troubled girls. Most of us can benefit from its words.
  •  Funnies:

  • I am a Gemini. This is completely accurate.

Have a great weekend! We’ll be back together on Tuesday with Judging Covers!!

Three (and a half) on Thursday

March 17, 2016 by Jana 7 Comments

Today’s post idea, title included, is completely ripped off from Stephanie at Not Entirely Perfect (a blog you should be reading if you’re already not) because I feel the need to write but am short on time.

Bandsintown. This is an app/Facebook linked site in the vein of Goodreads except it’s, as you can probably guess, for bands and concerts. You sign up and get alerts, you can RSVP to let your social media friends and followers know you’re interested or going to an event, and also see photos, tour trailers, and more inside scoop stuff. It’s a pretty fun app that I’m currently learning more about but it is helping me stalk tickets for the Carnival of Madness so there’s that.

All the Books. Probably my favorite podcast of all the podcasts. It’s a weekly one produced by Book Riot that’s devoted to new releases. Liberty and Rebecca are wonderful, knowledgeable, and personable hosts who love books and reading and authors as much as I do (maybe more, if that’s possible). Fellow booknerds and podcast fans, definitely check this one out. Also, it’s totally giving me an idea for a website for The Armchair Librarians.

Starbucks iced green tea. I prefer iced drinks to hot ones and now that the weather is warming up, I cannot stop drinking this. I have the K-cups at home because I would probably go broke drinking them from Starbucks every day (even with the $.50 refills). And, fortunately for me, I do not like sweetened tea (it’s disgusting and when I was down south and asked for unsweetened tea, everyone looked at me like they didn’t know what to do with me. #truestory), so not only is this tea delicious and slightly minty, it’s also calorie free!

And this.

The half part is this week’s episode of The Armchair Librarians. This week, Steph and I talk, in depth, about Tampa by Alissa Nutting. I’m still having technical difficulties getting the episodes into iTunes so until those are resolved and I’ve done a website for the show itself, I’ll link them here.
