Sharing my favorite posts

December 31, 2011 by Jana Leave a Comment

For today’s post, I wanted to list some of my favorite blogs of the year. So I thought and though and read and read and then realized that there was no way in hell I could pick my favorites. Every blog I read offers something else. Whether it’s information, humor, entertainment, thought-provoking opinions, skills, or inspiration, I truly enjoy every blog I read (well, all but 1. There’s one I read that I can’t stand but I feel compelled to read it). Picking my favorite blogs is akin to picking a favorite pet or child–you know you have one, you just don’t want to admit it for fear of insulting the other ones.

Instead, I’m going to pick some of my favorite posts from this very blog. In no particular order, here are some of my favorites:

The Tale of the $100 Paycheck–the story of my very first real paycheck.

Going on a Snowflake Hunt–little ways I’ve found to add money to my debt repayment

What I Learned from Controlling My Spending–the lessons I’ve learned from years of participating in a control/no-spend challenge

Fear Factor: Self-Employment–I outline my fears for taking the plunge into self-employment. Admin note: I’m pretty much over my fear and I’ll hopefully be jumping into self-employment in the next 6 months. Also, there’s Jason Segel reference. I really need to get started on my interviewing project.

Dependent Care: How We Do It–an explanation of how we maximize our DCA

What Downward Dog Taught Me About Finances–I took a yoga class and it made me think about money. And farting.

To all my readers, thanks for such a wonderful year! I’m proud of what this blog has become and it is entirely because of you. Thank you for coming back and reading and commenting. I appreciate every single one of you more than I can say. I’m looking forward to 2012!!!

Sharing Saturday #5

December 24, 2011 by Jana 3 Comments

With tonight being Christmas Eve (and the 5th night of Hanukkah), I can’t help but reflect on the gifts I’ve been given. Perhaps the greatest gift has been this blog and the phenomenal people I have met because of it. I don’t believe that it’s an accident that I’ve found my niche in personal finance writing. And what it’s opening up for me is unlike anything I’ve ever known.

There are certain bloggers who have propelled me to where I am and will help me to get to where I hope to go. So, for today’s sharing Saturday, I’m going to direct you to those who have made 2011 my best writing year ever:

So Over Debt–Andrea is the reason I started a personal finance blog. And the fact that she is a great friend is an added bonus. So really, she’s to blame for this whole thing. You can praise or blame her. I know she won’t mind.

Budgeting in the Fun Stuff–What can I say about Crystal? She was so friendly towards me at FinCon11 (I am painfully shy and socially awkward) and because of that and her support and pimping of my mad skills, I’m now a legitimate, money earning writer.

PF Firewall–Jesse’s never met me but he’s more supportive of me as a writer than almost anyone I know. I am so looking forward to meeting him at FinCon12 and giving hiim a big hug.

Mom’s Plans and Wealth Informatics–Two more great bloggers, Melissa and Suba have shown faith in my ability and have graciously brought me on as staff writers for some of their other projects. I hope I don’t let them down!

Another Housewife and The Dog Ate My Wallet–I’m putting these two ladies together because I know them from outside the blogging world and they are just amazing friends to have. They are talented, smart, warm and I am blessed and honored to call them my friends.

Careful Cents, Frugal Beautiful and The Financialite–My bitches. I met these ladies at FinCon11 and they rock. Look out for us in 2012. But be warned. The Bitches are coming (oh, and Andrea from So Over Debt? She’s a Bitch, too).

The Yakezie Network–Best. Network. Ever. Everyone I have interacted with from Yakezie is awesome. My blog would never have even gotten off the ground without this network. I can’t wait to become an official member next year alongside some of my friends like Eric from DollarVersity and Niki from Debt Free by 30.

2011 has been an interesting year for me. My life has been completely and forever changed because of this year. And next week, for New Year’s, I’ll provide you with a list of some of my favorite blogs that I’ve found in 2011.

Sharing Saturday #4

December 17, 2011 by Jana 13 Comments

Well, I survived this week with my daughter’s birthday, birthday party, my husband’s job offer, declaring my intent to participate in the $30K challenge and finally getting over bronchitis. I, for one, am glad it’s the weekend. Jimmy Fallon is hosting SNL, I have two great movies to watch and I have plenty of time to work on some writing projects. What are your weekend plans? I hope they include reading some of these great posts:

Personal finance reads (where I showcase some of my favorite personal finance posts)

Derek at Life and My Finances Got a New Puppy! I am always happy to hear when someone adds a furry child to his family. And Derek’s puppy is almost as cute as my guys were when they were puppies (for the record, they’re still cute now as middle aged dogs)!

Erika from Newlyweds On A Budgets asks if you’d rather Be Single and Rich or Poor and in Love. Personally, I’d rather be rich and in love, but since that’s not an option, I’m going with poor and in love. On most days, anyway.

Jeff from Sustainable Life Blog discusses Why Saying No Is Good Sometimes. I agree with him. I just wish I could do it more often!

Kay Lynn, the Bucksome Boomer, talks about what life is like for a Blogger Without the Internet. To me, life without the Internet is like life without Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or iced tea–terrible.

Money for College Project gives 3 Ways to Cope With Unwanted Christmas Presents. My family usually avoids this by giving very specific lists.

Shanendoah from The Dog Ate My Wallet suggests ways to Give to Charity for Free. This is so important to do this time of year, and throughout the rest of the year.

Dr. Dean, The Millionaire Nurse, lists the Top 10 Shoplifted Items at holiday time (and then some).

Money Beagle has a totally redesigned site. Make sure you check it out!

Nonpersonal finance reads (where I showcase some of my favorite nonpersonal finance sites)

My dear friend, Mrs. C., is an amazing mom, wife, budgeting pro and all around great lady. And she blogs, too! Go check out how she manages it all at Another Housewife

The Bloggess. She is funny, weird, a little bit crazy and I can’t get through any of her posts without laughing hysterically. She also has a book coming out. I think I love her.

Saturday sharing #3

Don’t forget to like Daily Money Shot on Facebook. If you do, you could win $25!

Here are some of my favorites from this past week:

Personal finance reads (where I showcase some of my favorite personal finance posts)

8 Frugal Ideas I Hate at Money Spruce. Jeffrey hits on a lot of ideas that I think lead to frugal fatigue. I have to say that my least favorite frugal idea is DIY just to save money. Sometimes it’s actually less expensive to pay a pro. Trust me on that one.

I Don’t Regret My Mistakes at Former Banker. I totally agree with Will on this. I don’t regret any mistakes that I’ve made because they’ve made me the person I am today. Besides, I’m too busy. I don’t have time for regret!

Work Hard and Shut Up! at Your Finances Simplified. A really entertaining video about a very hard working gentleman. His work ethic puts most of us to shame.

How To Make a Hogwarts Acceptance Letter at Debt Free by 30. Niki provides a fantastically creative and interesting way to make a Christmas gift for the Harry Potter fan in your life.

Shut It, Cinderella: The High Price of the Princess Mentality at The Debt Princess. Jessica makes a lot of really valid points regarding the correlation between the princess dream that is sold to little girls and debt. For the record, Cinderella is not my least favorite princess. That would be a tie between Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Nonpersonal finance reads (where I showcase some of my favorite nonpersonal finance sites)

Hyperbole and a Half–Not only is Allie and awesome cartoonist, she’s a pretty damn good writer, too. Her stories are freaking hysterical and so are the illustrations. I think my favorite is the Alot. What’s yours?

Passive Aggressive Notes–Whenever I need to read the notes I wish I had written, I go here. Then I feel better.

The Problem With Young People Today Is…— I’ve recommended a post on this site before but now I’m recommending the whole site. It’s absolutely one of the funniest most well-written sites out there. Go check it out now. Seriously.

Sharing Saturday #1

November 19, 2011 by Jana 7 Comments

I feel like a blog hoarder.

My reader and bookmarks are full of other blogs that I never share. This is wrong of me. There are so many amazing and creative writers out there, and it’s shameful that I don’t give them more props. So I am pledging to resolve this problem. From now on, on as many Saturdays as I remember, I will be sharing with you some of my favorite posts and sites from around the blogosphere. If you know of one that I’m not reading, or you think I should be reading (personal finance is not a requirement), then feel free to send it to me.

With that, I present the first installment of Sharing Saturday:

Personal Finance reads (where I showcase some of my favorite personal finance posts)

Crystal at Budgeting in the Fun Stuff thought about getting a puppy. I think she should have done it, but I totally respect her reasons why she didn’t (including not paying for a puppy and rather waiting to rescue one)

Carrie from Careful Cents wants to know if women are more desireable when they’re broke. It’s a great question and it kind of makes me sad that it’s true.

Melissa from Mom’s Plans is having trouble in her current apartment and wants to know if she should move. My answer? Absolutely!

Kay Lynn at Bucksome Boomer not only won the cookbook giveaway but gave some great tips on dealing with holiday travel. My preferred tip for dealing with holiday travel is not to go anywhere (and it looks like this is going to be a lot more common for us in the future!)

Lindy from Minting Nickels talks about the other kind of creep. We all have creeps in our lives. Is this one in yours?

Nonpersonal finance reads (where I showcase some of my favorite nonpersonal finance sites)

The Oatmeal–cartoons, cats, grammar, and lots of other stuff. I wish I could pick a favorite one. But I can’t. So I’m not going to.

Mental Floss–my favorite time wasting site of all time. Fun fact: I scored 100% on the Tom Hanks peeing quiz. I am both happy and sad about this.

Post It Notes from My Idiot Boss–we all have had an idiot for a boss. Some bosses just choose to document their stupidity via post-it notes.
