Birthday week continues so we’re going to talk all about me because that’s what you do during birthday week. Today, I’m going to share random facts you might or might not already know but I figured I’d hashtag the shit out of them for extra fun.
My parents’ 41st wedding anniversary was on Monday and, because my birthday is so close to their anniversary, I tell them that I’m the best anniversary present ever (I also use this as justification for not getting them presents on a regular basis because really, how do you top your own birth? That’s right. You can’t. So I don’t). #ididitonpurpose
I was in a sorority in college. Delta Gamma, for those who are curious. #notallsororitygirlsarevapid
I have a dual undergraduate degree in criminal justice and sociology. I have a master’s in public policy. While I don’t work in those fields anymore, this explains nonfiction books I read and discuss. #iusedtobesmart #ipickedthewrongmajor
I don’t chew gum. #hurtsthejaw
I also do not eat anything orange flavored, including oranges and all of its cousins like clementines and tangerines. I don’t even like the way they smell and, confession time, when my daughter asks me to peel one for her, I tell her no. #worstflavorever #exceptforcoconut
When I was a kid, my best friend was named Rachael. Her mom is the one who taught me how to tie my shoes and she taught me to use bunny ears. I still tie my shoes that way. #bunnyearsarebetterthanloopswoopandpull
I have broken bones, gotten stitches, and once, I got hit in the face with a line drive that earned me two black eyes and 3 days home from school. #battlescarsmakegoodstories
I failed my road test 4 times. Passed on the fifth. #parallelparkingishard
Two of my favorite teachers in high school were science teachers. #butistillhatescience
The first concert I went to was New Kids on the Block and Tiffany. The first concert I went to by myself (with friends, no parents) was Warrant and Poison. The last concert I went to was Rush. #evolutionoftaste #istilllistentoallofthem
The only one of the main 4 professional sports I have not seen live is basketball. I have no plans for that either. #squeakingsneakersdrivemecrazy
Now that you know more than you ever cared to about me, share a random fact of two about you!
Linda Sheridan says
The concerts of my life- Santana, Elton John, Don Henley.
I have taken vitamin supplements every day since the age of 20.
It has worked very well for me!
I have always maintained my vehicles and name them and thank them. You can’t go far without your car.
Carpe diem.
Love, Steph’s Momma
Jana says
I name my cars, too!
Amanda @ My Life, I Guess says
Happy birthday week! Mine is only 10 days away ๐
In other random facts about me, I was also a sorority girl in University. I LOVED it. I learned so much about leadership through them, and really came out of my shell as a person. I honestly think that being Recruitment Chair while an active member was the best “job” I ever had.
I only failed my driver’s test once – but yep, it was all the parallel parking’s fault. ๐

Jana says
Haha! That was the job I wanted least and never even tried for because I despised rush. Unfortunately, I was good at it. Go figure!
Parallel parking is the WORST!
ellesees.blogspot.com says
i don’t chew gum either for the same reason. i like the scent of oranges but they give me blisters and ulcers on my skin if i eat them. i cant stand raspberries. it’s like eating perfume!

Raspberries I like but they can turn very quickly!
Teh Megan says
When I played soccer in middle school, I took a ball to the face and it hit me so hard I hit the ground head first then my body landed. I don’t remember falling but I remember standing up and my teammates said it look liked someone had turned on the blood faucet from my nose. They wouldn’t let me go back in the game because of blood on my uniform and they kept trying to tell me how to make my nose stop bleeding and finally I was like STFU I’m a nosebleed kid and I’m used to this! #athleticsarehard.

My eyes instantly turned black and blue and I had a nosebleed. I was so stunned, I sort of fell on the pitcher’s mound and then I was escorted off the field and into my coach’s office and she called my parents to take me to the hospital (I was in high school in the days where cell phones were not common). I remember interrupting the boys’ volleyball team’s practice and being completely mortified. I don’t even know why I cared.
Mariah-Food, Booze, & Baggage says
Happy Birthday week!! I like cherries but hate cherry flavored anything. One of my favorite teachers in HS was the science teacher too. I’ve never broken a bone or had to have stitches (not on wood) ๐
Jana says
Now cherries and cherry flavored things I love! I wonder why so many science teachers are so awesome…

Squeaking sneakers – drive me – up the WALL.
And you are still smart – silly lady!!!!
Oranges are something I have gotten into – but sometimes, just can’t do it!

I have childhood trauma from oranges that prevents me from accepting it as a viable food option. Unless it was eat an orange or starve to death. Then I’d deal with it.
Christina says
I like oranges, but I’m with you on coconut. I love the smell, but not the taste or texture. I have no desire to see a basketball game either. I love going to the other three (and MLS too)!

Jana says
YES! The smell is wonderful! But the taste and texture…disgusting. Except on fried coconut shrimp. Then it’s delicious.
lisacng @ expandng.com says
I also failed my driver’s test multiple times. Parking, driving too far to the left of a street with no dividing line, and something else…The first time I failed, “I believe I can fly” was on the radio and the song lifted me out of despair :).

I have way too many jokes about R. Kelly. I will leave it at that.
I failed because of parallel parking every. Single. Time. It’s my nemesis.
SMD @ Life According to Steph says
I believe anniversary celebrations belong to the people having the anniversary so no gifts are necessary. You are clearly the gift that keeps on giving here.
Birthday week!

I am definitely the gift that keeps on giving. I have no problem reminding my parents of that all year long.

I’m still a criminal justice nerd. Yay (boo?) for useless degrees!
kathy @ real talk says
what? orange is my FAV flavour!! sorry, we can’t be friends anymore ๐
i wore braces longer than most people (4yrs) and had both head gear and neck gear because life is cruel; i used to sneak into over-age bars when i was 17 using my sister’s ID and pretended to be 19 or older.
yay for birthday week!
kathy @ real talk recently posted…confessions
Jana says
No. We can’t. Orange is the WORST.
I wore my bottom braces for 3 years but never had the pleasure of head gear. I did have those god awful rubber bands, though. I’m the oldest in my family so no IDs for me to borrow. #sad
Amber says
I failed my road test twice. I just found it terribly awkward to be driving and having a stranger beside me, staring silently.

I like oranges the fruit, but not orange flavored things for the most part. Like the orange popsicles and jelly beans get thrown out in my house. Haha! And we already discovered that we are long lost bunny ear tying sisters! ๐ It is the right way to tie!!!!

Bunny ears are the only way!!!
My husband loves all things orange flavored, including jello. I don’t understand our relationship sometimes.
Kristen says
hahahaha squeaking sneakers. love it.
i like oranges and their friends, but refuse to peel, so… i don’t eat them. my mum hates bananas so we never had them in the house. ever. and bunny ears for life, what is this other way? crazy!

Another one in the bunny ears column! We’re the best!
I love how moms are in control of the fruit purchases in all the homes.

Never been to a basketball game too… not interest either. And I failed my road test (once, but I still commiserate!) too because of parallel parking. I’ve parallel parked maybe 3 times in the 9 years since that I’ve had my license. Chicken or the egg?
Julia @ Grace Makes New says
Love this post! I totally agree that you should celebrate your birthday all week, I fully intend to do the same! Love that your first concert was NKOTB!

Is it sad I can’t remember how I learned to tie my shoes. ๐ We had to parallel park but there were no others cars around, lazy DMV for the win! My test was like 10 minutes tops.

I failed my road test twice. Everyone always thinks that’s shameful.
I hate basketball. I’ve seen some college games and I also don’t care for baseball (which Scott thinks is shameful because he played in college). Football is the only professional sport I can deal with.
