To start this year-end (and most likely my last post of 2017) without a resounding THANK YOU would make me kind of an asshole. So, thanks to everyone who continues to support this little linkup of ours. We have an amazing community full of awesome and diverse book nerds and we appreciate every single one of you, whether you join us monthly, every few months, once a year, or if you just read the posts. Books are incredible source of joy and escape and information and in a world that’s gone crazy (literally. You’ve seen our president, right?), having books and access to books is more crucial than ever. So please keep sharing and tweeting and writing and doing all that you do to support books and the people who write them.
Before we discuss the books, let’s look a few statistics because I think that’s fun:
- I read 84 books this year, which averages to 7 per month. More than most, less than many
- I finished 69 fiction and 15 nonfiction
- I DNF’d 3
- I read over 26,000 pages
- The longest book I read was around 590 pages
- The shortest book I read was around 50
Now for my picks: I chose my 10 favorites and 4 honorable mentions (I wanted to do 5 but I had like 4 books that fit so I left them all out). There are probably no surprises and while my list doesn’t match many professional year-end lists, I like that it doesn’t.
If you want to read my recaps of all the books I’ve listed, just follow the link to the month in which I read it (or you can follow me on Litsy).
Okay. Here we go. The collage is random and in no particular order although I do think it’s funny that Evelyn and The Hate U Give are the biggest since I’ve probably talked about them more than any others.
- The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (reviewed in March)
- The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (reviewed in June)
- Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt (reviewed in September)
- The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley by Hannah Tinti (reviewed in May)
- Confessions by Kinae Minato (reviewed in June)
- The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel (reviewed in April)
- The Cleaner by Paul Cleave (fun fact: the lone man on the best of list. Reviewed in September)
- Janesville: An American Story by Amy Goldstein (reviewed in October)
- Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (reviewed in November)
- American Fire by Monica Hesse (reviewed in October)
Honorable Mentions (you’ll find a few more men on this list)
- Turtles All the Way Down by John Green
- They Both Die At the End by Adam Silvera
- Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore by Matthew Sullivan
- All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood
I probably could have picked more. I keep saying it but CHOICES ARE HARD and I read some damn fine books this year. A few duds but overall, I had a great reading year. I’m looking forward to next year’s choices. Maybe I’ll get through a year without a DNF. High hopes, friends. High hopes.
Now it’s your turn! Let us know about your favorites of the year. Don’t forget to visit Steph and some other bloggers and fill up that TBR (and maybe plan how to spend some Christmas money)!

Ah two of my favorites are on here! Confessions (which I read thanks to you) and All the Ugly and Wonderful Things. Evelyn Hugo was great too although it didn’t make my final list. If I had done honorable mention I think it would have gone on that list. 🙂
Kristin says
I love the idea of having honorable mentions because sometimes we don’t LOVE books but we’d still recommend them.
Thanks for hosting!

I will say like I told Steph, I was happy to see Seven Husbands on your list of favs for 2017 as well. Although it was my top pick for the year, it did make it to my top eight! Happy New Year!

Evelyn Hugo and Roanoke Girls made my list. The one Cleave book I read last year also made my list. I need to work through the rest of his catalog. And I think every book you listed is already on my TBR and I need to get them soon! Thanks again for hosting the very best link-up EVER! 😀

I agree, choices are sometimes tough…
All the Ugly and Wonderful Things made both my Top Ten list and my Best of list. I still think about that story a lot and I read it last month! I will be reading The Seven Husbands… soon. Happy Holidays!

Evelyn Hugo is on my list for next year and I’m excited to read it after I’ve heard how much everybody loves it! And I just finished up Little Fires Everywhere and loved it so much! It was also really interesting how she told the story too. Thanks to you and Steph for always hosting the linkup! I look forward to it every month!

Ah, yes – a year for escapist reading, for sure…but also a good year for books to help us understand people’s experiences in important ways – The Hate U Give being such a good example. I loooooved Little Fires Everywhere too.

Yes, choices are SO hard!! I read so many excellent books this year. I love your picks and totally agree about The Hate U Give. I read Tell The Wolves… in 2016 I think but I agree about it being such a wonderful one. I just finished Little Fires last night so didn’t add it to my list but I think I would have if I had finished it pre-blog post 🙂

Thanks for another great year of SUYB!!! I love this link up and all of the books. You will notice I was unable to narrow down my books like you…choices are SO hard! Haha. I also try to just think of books that I actually remember off the top of my head and then browse Goodreads and remember all the others I loved 🙂 The Hate U Give & Little Fires Everywhere were incredible.

Busting out GoodReads now. Little Fires Everywhere in particular looks like a great fit for my Around the World thing–which I have vowed to finally post about again this month. Thank you once again for all the great recommendations!

I’ve heard so many great things about many of your favorites from 2017. I’m disappointed that I had to return The Hate U GIve before reading TWICE. The timing just did not line up for me. I hope to read it this year though, along with a few others from your list. 84 is a good number for the year, especially if you enjoyed most of them. 🙂 XO – Alexandra
