I have been wanting to use this song for months but for some reason, I couldn’t find the video. But victory is mine! I’ve found it!
Though I’ve never actually said this to anyone, there have been plenty of times I’ve seen able bodied people refuse to work for…whatever reason. Seriously, take your pick of reasons: can’t find a management position, don’t want to lose food stamps, forgot to apply, have no way of getting there, there’s nothing available…the list goes on. And on. And on. It’s a frightening side effect of working in social services.
I’m sure I’m not the only one in that position. What’s the worst reason you’ve ever heard for someone refusing to work? Leave it in the comments below!
While you’re thinking, enjoy this video of The Offspring’s “Why Don’t You Get a Job”:

I’ve heard variations on that one. So frustrating!

A friend who can’t take a job because it pays too much- he has to earn under a certain amount to stay in his low income, rent controlled apartment, that he loves the location of. (And honestly, non low income housing in that area costs 3x as much). But still. Drives me crazy when a man in his 30s tells me it’s great- he can now never have a job that pays more than 30k a year so that he can keep his apartment.

I would have to stop being friends with that person. Seriously. There’s no way I could stay friends with someone who milks the system like that. And has such little ambition.

I don’t know, maybe this is a valid reason but, I have a friend that says she can’t apply for new jobs until she takes care of some credit issues. Now, I know some jobs run credit checks but, why assume that every job you apply for will run a check? I mean, why not clean up the credit while applying for jobs at the same time? I dunno. Maybe it’s just me being harsh but, what’s the worst that can happen…they don’t offer you a job? If so, on to the next application.

I can almost accept that explanation except I can’t understand why she wouldn’t just come up with a good, solid answer for an employer who might question the blemishes. Unless they’re criminal. Hmmm…

This probably wasn’t being played at the occupy protests last year. There’s tons of work out there if you want it. Great message Jana, and I love the Offspring anthem.

Yes indeed. I have seen it with people close to me and it DRIVES ME NUTS! I have absolutely no understanding when someone who needs to work, and is able to work, but does not work. I get that in our current system, there may be some negatives (loss of benefits, etc) but what happened to the pride and dignity of pulling oneself up? I just don’t get it.
Jana says
It’s not something I understand either. I know that there are people who have never been taught a work ethic, which makes me sad, but I can’t imagine it’s an easier life to have to constantly prove yourself to a system.

I heard one person saying that because she has no qualifications she would hardly earn more than social welfare so she prefers not working! What about starting from there and building your way up like everybody else?!
Jana says
I have heard that excuse from former clients on numerous occasions. Sadly, you cannot convince someone that starting at the bottom is going to beget success if you work hard enough.
