First, thank you all for your comments, feedback, and general awesomeness on Wednesday’s post. It showed everything that’s awesome about the blogger community and why I love it so much. Because even when you feel like you’re alone, you’re really not.
That said, let’s move on to this week’s recap.
This week in frugaling…I’ve recently started drinking coffee on a few days a week basis and because I’m cheap, I usually make it at home. I bought some Starbucks coffee grounds (which I do not like) but I did learn that I not only can get a little star on my rewards card from buying it but I can get a free tall coffee when the bag is empty so it’s like getting half my money back. On another note, does anyone know what to do with coffee beans you don’t like? I’m inclined to throw them out but it seems like a waste.
This week in reading…Last week I finished The Martian (LOVED IT and I am so glad I bowed to Kristen’s peer pressure to read it), moved on to Dan Harris’s 10% Happier, finished that and now I’m reading Jo Nesbo’s The Son. I also picked up Mobile Library by David Whitehouse and now have enough books to get me through until next month’s Show Us Your Books linkup on April 14th. Mark it down.
This week in TV watching…I binge watched Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and while I generally cannot tolerate Jane Krakowski (although I’ll admit, towards the last few episodes, my tolerance level increased), the show is awesome (edit: it took me a few episodes to get into but once I did, I enjoyed it. Like Parks and Rec, I’m glad I didn’t quit on it) and Ellie Kemper is spectacular. Casting her could not have been a better choice. And speaking of Netflix shows, Bloodline releases TODAY and since I have a major crush on Kyle Chandler, I’m thrilled the show is finally here (and thanks to Tonya for the heads up all those months ago about the show).
This week in parenting…Not only did I finally order a very sparkly cheer mom shirt (which, thanks to very poor word placement, I have to implement the Downy trick to stretch out the material) but I actually remembered to text one of her friend’s moms to schedule a play date, I let her sleep in bed with me after she had a nightmare (the husband was out of town for a few days so there was room) despite my strict “no child in the bed” rule, she put her laundry away without being reminded, and I learned she’s been buying salads for lunch at school. I feel like I’ve won all the parenting battles this week.
This week in internet links…Buzzfeed hit the mark with two great posts, 13 Incredibly Detailed Floor Plans of the Most Famous TV Homes and This is What Depression Looks Like (incidentally, I wrote a post with the same name awhile ago). Time shared a great article from XO Jane on how Being a Stay At Home Mom is Not a Job (as a current SAHM, I loved the perspective in this one) and The NY Times shared a photo series on what 2,000 calories looks like. Very interesting.
This week in laughs…
That’s all she wrote this week. I’ll be back on Monday when I interview myself about my reading habits. Have a great weekend!

I keep all the beans I’m not crazy about in the freezer. They’ll be useful in case of a zombie apocalypse.
Or if my parents come to visit. They don’t mind Denny’s (Scott brought a bag of Denny’s coffee beans home). Also, I have a bag of Starbucks beans that I’m going to turn into iced coffee this weekend.

I actually read this comment earlier as I was making the coffee and decided to use your advice and turn it into iced coffee. Much more pleasant tasting, although I will never buy this again.

Sounds like a good week! I slept in bed with Steph many nights.
When I had Stephen, I put a sleeping bag on the floor next to my bed and that’s where he slept. Then Sean slept on a mattress on the floor next to Rich’s side. I needed sleep to be able to get up for work, so I did what worked for me. My kids felt safe and we all slept. Now I have no kids in my bedroom and my sleeps are not as good as they were then! Go figure. Have a fun weekend. Hope you miss the spring
snow. Love, SMD’s Momma

I feel like we all sleep better when we’re in our respective rooms. It’s been that way since she’s a baby. I do let her as a treat when the husband goes away and she doesn’t have school but other than that, it’s a pretty hard and fast rule.

I’ve heard so many good things about that show! Hope to be able to watch it soon, we don’t have Netflix though so I’m not sure how I’ll watch it! Wow, you’ve had a great week in parenting, you are a parenting rock star! 🙂

Maybe I’ll see if I can gift you a month of Netflix so you can watch it 🙂
I do feel like a parenting rock star this week. I’m sure next week will put me in my place.

Grrrr, I WANTED to love Kimmy Schmidt – why don’t I love it?!?! Also, did you see the rebuttal to that XO article? I’m not a mom so I stay out of these things; but apparently that XO piece was SUPER controversial & got people really fired up!

I haven’t seen the rebuttal but I’ll have to look for it. I’m sure I’ll appreciate the sentiment but I really agreed with this one. I can see how it’s really controversial because the mommy wars are brutal.
It took me a few episodes to really get into the show but I LOVED Carol Kane and I feel like as the show went on, the characters got stronger and less whiny, which made me like it more. But I could see how you wouldn’t love it. It’s definitely an all or nothing show. Love or hate.
Ali A says
I think I hyped it up too much in my mind (LOVE Tina Fey, LOVE 30 Rock, LOVE The Office) and this fell a bit short for me. Someone told me it gets better as it goes on, and I admittedly stopped at episode 4. I’ll give it another shot – I WANT TO LIKE IT!

YAY I AM SO GLAD you loved the martian, seriously, i was like really worried you and steph wouldn’t like it haha.
i don’t drink coffee so i vote throw all the coffee out! not helpful? sorry.
she’s buying salads? that is awesome and fabulous parenting, in my humble non parent opinion.
i watched most of Kimmy Schmidt, I think I got up to the birthday one. I liked some of it, but overall didn’t absolutely have to finish. I might finish it some other time, but i ended up choosing a book over TV last night and the night before. It was funny, don’t get me wrong, it was very funny. But maybe I binge watched too much and I needed a break. The episodes get better towards the end? The song has been in my head all week haha.

I watched the show over a few days. It definitely got better towards the end. The theme song is probably the best one I’ve heard in a long time.
Yes, I loved it and so did my husband! He kept asking me what part I was up to and he read it before I did and was trying to tell me about it and I was all up in face, yelling “don’t ruin it for me!!!”

What is my mother’s comment in reference to?
I loved The Martian too!
That SAHM article is KICK ASS.

I made a comment that I let the child sleep in bed with me after she had a nightmare and I have a usually strict rule about her NOT sleeping in bed with me. I’m guessing that’s what it was.
I loved that article so, so much. She eloquently said many things I’ve been thinking lately.
Karen says
I’m looking forward to reading The Martian, I’m pretty sure it’s a book club pick. My memory can be awful lately so I should probably double check this! I heard that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is supposed to be hilarious. I think Ellie Kempner is totally underrated, I love her. Hope you have a great weekend!

Ellie Kemper is so underrated but she’s amazing! It’s fun to watch her in scenes with Jon Hamm, knowing he was her high school drama teacher.
The Martian is a great read!

Nice parenting wins! And I loved Ellie Kemper in that role too, she was just great. I adored her on The Office and this was so perfect for her too. I’m always crushing on Kyle Chandler too (Coach Taylor is my everything <3) and I can't wait to check out that series. I didn't realize it was here already! Thanks for clueing me in 😉

I am always happy to share Kyle Chandler news/sightings! I freak out if I’m watching a movie and he shows up when I didn’t expect him to. Like the Wolf of Wall Street. Made the movie so much better 🙂

I look forward to a week when I feel I’ve won all parenting battles, I feel like the terrible twos showed up at 5. I spend more time taking privileges away for bad behavior than I do feeling like I’m doing a good job lately. Also there was a meltdown, and I mean meltdown over the new YouTube Kids App which I downloaded for her instead of regular Youtube. You would have thought the fact that it scrolls left to right instead of up and down was THE END of the world.
Jana says
I haven’t downloaded that for her. Maybe I should. She feels all important when she has stuff that just for kids. Like it’s an exclusive club.
shanendoah says
I know you always have a long list of books to read, but I HIGHLY recommend (fiction) Never Let Me Go by Ishiguro if you haven’t read it yet. Also, since you love words, (non-fiction) The Professor and the Madman by Winchester.

I have seen people put coffee beans inside a candle holder and burn a candle in them to produce a pleasant smell. 🙂 A lot of people have been talking about that show lately and I am going to have to cave in and watch it!!! And Kristen had me convinced to add Martians to my to read list and you just sealed the deal with confirmation.
I would say that you most certainly win mom of the week award!!! I dont like thinking about how much 2,000 calories looks like. It is like we KNOW the truth yet we refuse to remember it sometimes. I hope you have a fabulous weekend!!!!

I read the Martian, and I loved the characters. I dug The Son.

I’m glad I stuck with Kimmy too. It was pretty cheesy throughout, but mostly in the beginning and I wasn’t sure I could get through it. I did really like it though. I gotta check out The Martian now! I LOVE that SAHM article and I’m about to go share it everywhere.
